Does driving an exotic give you the right to occupy two spots??« »

I witnessed this for the first time the other night.. Didn't really catch on until I heard a rant about it on the radio this morning. I came out of a restaurant, and there was a beautiful F430 parked on an angle across two straight parking spots, right at the front of the parking lot. All I thought, was wow, what a show off..

Then this morning on the radio someone was complaining about how they've seen exotics parked around Calgary taking up two spots in a similar fashion and that the drivers were doing this to keep people from dinging their car.

What does the CL think of this practice? I'm not sure I agree. Where do you draw the line? Should a guy with a ferrari have any more right to protect his car from dings then a guy with a new 1 series BMW or even a two year old KIA? The person with the two year old KIA would probably find it harder financially to get the ding repairs done then either of the other two.. Maybe if you're way at the back of a parking lot with lots of free space, but not the prime space near the front of a restaurant with limited parking.

What gives?

I'd say no.

And I was quite pleasantly surprised to see an F430 coupe parked in my garage the other day, occupying only one end spot.

Next time I see this, I'm parking my wife's Corolla as close as I can to whatever car it is, snapping a pic, and remembering the license plate in case the owner tries to get clever when he sees what I did. I'll get a chuckle out of it, and when you consider the Corolla in question, I really have nothing to lose.

I wouldn't do it if I had an exotic (or in any of the cars I have owned or currently own). I think you're just begging to get keyed. It's riskier than just parking in one spot.

I wouldn't key anyone's car for doing that, and I'm not saying they deserve it, but it happens.

I look for safe parking spots far from the door. I'd do the same thing, only more diligently, if I drove an exotic.

if theres plenty of spots and he parks in the back sure who cares, but if its a crowded mall and he take 2 spots you deserve a autograph with a key on the car.

then again if you drive a f430 im sure the owner can afford the valet fee and leave it parked up front.

Taking 2 spaces with a nice car in front of the parking lot is basically asking your car to get keyed by the angry and/or jealous.

I park at the back of the lot and in corners to avoid dents/dings. Not up front in 2 spaces. Parking close to the corner curbs or partially into the slashed lines at the end of a line has kept me ding free.

Last time a guy took 2 spots at the mall in the front of the lot, I just left an empty 6-pack of Newcastle on his hood so he'd re-think his practices.

Anyone who double parks their car in a front spot is asking for someone to f*ck with their car imo. However as stated above, if your taking up 2 spots at the back of the parking lot when its nearly empty anyway then who cares?

You'd be surprised. Well, I got a part time job as a valet at the local casino (for fun and a few extra $$$) and a guy came in with a new F430. Basically, to get your car parked "up top" and out of the valet attendant's hands who bring them to the garage below, you basically slip the doorman ~$20. The guy wanted special treatment but didn't show the doorman any $$$ so they told him they have to put his car downstairs, but... turns out it was a RENTAL F430 and he refused to turn the keys over to the valet (too bad, that would have been fun!). So he wanted to drive it into the valet garage himself (mind you, the garage is packed, confusing, not the place you'd want to drive through and park yourself). It's forbidden, but he bitched enough so they let him drive down with an escort. And he took the key.

I looked around the garage but never found it. I don't think he stayed too long. Oh well. Either he was broke after renting a Ferrari, really cheap, or doesn't understand how to get your car parked "Up top".

No one said they would do it just that it might happen and if it does he deserves it , and i say never do it, and if you park anything else make sure you park straight like if its a big truck, when i had my mkIII jetta i had a huge lifted truck park in the spot crooked and i couldn't open my door i had to get in through the other door

On the contrary, many of us aren't ***holes.

In answer to the OP, no, they're not entitled to take up two spots just because they're driving something extremely expensive and they don't want it dinged. Such a person brings retribution upon themselves, or rather upon the car. I'm not saying I'd mess with it, but if I saw someone else messing with it I'd look the other way.

Coincidentally I've never seen this behaviour in Calgary. Ever.

About a month ago I was leaving Papa Murphy's pizza and noticed a yellow Gallardo Spyder with a black roof parked in the shopping complex parking lot, right in front of the major supermarket at one end of the complex.

Dude had balls. Not only was he parked perfectly straight in a single spot, he was right up at the entrance of the store where all the plebes park their Camrys and Malibus and he was only a few spaces away from a cart return.

I salute you, yellow Gallardo Spyder driver.

i vote yes.

he who holds the gold makes the rules.

if someone wants to take two spots for their 1/2 million dollar car, by all means go right ahead. i'll park my lowly hyundai on the street out of respect for them not wanting 'tards dinging their ridiculously expensive car.

not saying i'd ding it if i parked beside it, but i can respect their paranoia about people with cheap cars not caring about their car as much as they do.

yeah, I'd say you're ignoring the other side of the coin. The only reason to occupy two spaces is because of the asshats that will door ding you without so much as a second thought. They just throw their door open with the fullest force possible and then repeatedly ding you over and over again as they attempt to squeeze their fat ass out of their rust bucket whilst carrying their bag of Big Macs and super size colas. Also blame the parking lot companies that try to fit as many spaces as they can by reducing the size per space.

There are so many people that have absolutely no respect for other people's property that I think it's reasonable to want to protect your property by parking in two spaces.

that said, I can usually find a corner space at the back of the parking lot where nobody else is and occupy two spaces where I'm not in anybody else's way. Doing it right up front is kind of bringing on the situation you are trying to avoid in the first place.

The problem, is that when you do this, you are just begging for some idiot to key your car.

I prefer to park much further away, but still in one spot.

If your fancy car is too wide to be parked normally without incurring dings, buy a beater M3 for driving to the mall and leave the F430 for weekend drives. I don't care how hard you worked for your car; I worked hard for mine too and have the same right to try to keep it from getting dinged. If you can take up two spaces, so can I.

Personally, I park in one space, towards the end of the lot, uphill.

I say hell no they don't, unless they're parked way out in a lot that isn't going to fill up anyway.

I say a 911 double parked in an airport parking garage not too long ago. On my way out I just happened to walk by a garage attendent and mentioned it to him. He said he'd seen it already, and the wrecker was on the way. Fair enough IMO.

I don't want my car dinged up any more than someone driving an exotic. I pay attention to where I'm parking, and make sure I'm centered up in the spot to give someone less reason to park too close. If I'm going to be leaving the car someplace for a while (like airport parking or even a movie theater, I'll park farther away just to reduce the amount of traffic.

There's no excuse for double parking, even an exotic.

Oh, that is just the foulest of crap. If I can fit a '62 Galaxie within the lines of a compact spot*, then someone with a 360 can get their precious smaller car in the bigger spot just fine.

So no, they don't. It's beyond stupid, it's just arrogant. They are so arrogant that they don't even consider that parking like a moron could piss people off, leading to actual damage to the supercar, instead of the pretend damage that they incur by parking like a normal human being.

* OK, it stuck out quite a ways, but it didn't block anyone else and it was the last spot open at the dentist's, gimme a break
