My old roommate had a 90 Quattro Sedan with the 20V 5 cylinder that had around 175 hp I believe. I loved that car and would have to take the coupe Quattro out of these three, despite it being the slowest and only having 136hp.

It's funny reading this article from way back when...and seeing where the companies are now. And the 924 was initially supposed to be a VW...imagine where VW would be now...

The descriptions below the images where the cars are taking the curve............................................are funny.

I can just picture the Corrado flipping over and piling into a heard of sheep.

"Corrado can lift rear wheel when pressing on, but roadholding fine"

Flip

Tumble

Sheep

Sheep death

Oh $h!~

 Re: (audivwdave) »« »

While the G60 may have won that battle...lo these many years later, the car of choice for me of that pack would be the 944, no question.

Even if the Audi was 20V equipped, it is still terribly light on torque and suffers from a chassis that is designed for terminal understeer. Plus I've never found the Coupe to be an attractive car.

Trying to keep a stock G60 on the road is an exercise in frustration, and while VW did a brilliant job of tuning what is a very simple chassis setup it doesn't overcome the lackluster engine and infuriating build quality.

The 944 is still one of the most well-balanced RWD cars built. I think its interesting that their test car wore 195/65/15 tyres rather than the US-spec 215/60/15 size; I have to wonder if the squirrely understeer/oversteer transition wouldn't have been mitigated a bit by a wider tire? I've never heard of a 944 being criticized for that before.

Of the three, it's the car I'd own--especially in 2.7L form. With an ECU remap, high-flow cat, and throttle cam the car is really transformed.

i've owned both! although my 1984 944 was only 2.5 liters, imho i prefer the corrado in all aspects.

Um. Porsche built an upmarket engine for their 356 lineup called the Super 90. Guess why they called it that... Go ahead, guess. Yes, because it had 30 hp more than their standard 60 hp engine.

Believe it or not, cars can be an absolute blast with less than 100 hp. Hell, the most fun cars I've had have had less than 100 hp. Including my VR6 GTi and my Jetta 16v (although the Jetta is awfully fun!)

i honestly didn't think that the corrado was in the same league as these cars (maybe the audi). kind of surprised it did so well.

i love all the funny phrases:

"Together they constitute a personal goosepimple factor . . ."

"The right-hooker will be powered by the notably less exciting 138bhp 16V GTi unit."

". . .VW reopend the grave and pulled out a set of strings that are as inharmonious as a warped record and as vague as a horoscope cast by a fair-ground fortune-teller."

"The Audi . . . has twice as much spring travel which is for fine *****-footed drives."

good stuff.
