I've also heard that the scirocco was coming through some vw peeps, but of course have nothing in writing to share. If it really is DSG only, I won't touch it. Maybe if its a 7 speed, but we'll see.

(BTW all reviews agree that the Scirocco is a better handler than the GTI, which in turn handles slightly better than the A3).

That hierarchy may have changed since the A3 update added Magnetic Ride as an option.

I'd be very interested to see a handling comparison between a GTI and an A3 with MR. I predict that the A3 would handle better. If that is the case, then there shouldn't be much of a performance difference between the Scirocco and A3. There would of course still be the significant price difference, but the A3 does make up for some of that with its nicer interior and premium badge.

I agree my evaluation was from yesteryear.

Then again, both the Scirocco and the MkVI GTI also offer DCC. In addition, the MkVI GTI has a front LSD - something the A3 doesn't have.

Granted, whether any of these will show up as options in the US, is questionable. My bet is that that at least the GTI's LSD will. And, if rumors are true that VW plans for a fairly high-end Scirocco, DCC may be standard.

VW EV, plug-in Hybrid, and/or 1.4-2.0 VVT&VVL T/dual-charged FSI engines for the US would be useful...

Yeah, but the Scirocco always had styling that made it stand out from the Golf/GTI. The current Scirocco just looks like an improved GTI.

It looks a lot different from the GTI in real life IMO.

If this car is over $40k with the 200hp 2.0T, it'll never sell.

Fixed

VW will price the new Rocco near $40K fully loaded to distance it from the lowly GTI. TCL will set up a sister site called WTFVWOMGScrioccoprice.com. The Scriocco will be dropped from the US line up exactly 43 days from its debut. TCL will then start a petition to bring it back again....

Why would the number of times you can click a button make any difference in how enjoyable it is to drive? Either you're going to like DSG, or not... I can't imagine there being much difference between a 5, 6, or 7 speed configuration.

It's a pity that the Scirocco doesn't have the interiors of the new Golf VI. These have a much more upscale and modern feel. Also the Golf is now a more iconic name than the Scirocco ever was. I would prefer myself a 3 door Golf VI than a Scirocco.

Neverthless the Scirocco is a great looking car.

What's a scirahcco?

Scirahcco - The latest version of the VW favorite that was manufactured from 1975 - 1989. Spelling was altered from the original to reflect the loss of "handling, feel and drivability" that occurs when any car gains ~1000lbs.

You asked...

No, I don't actually have to drive the new model to state the above...comparing driving characteristics of a MkII Jetta to a MkV Jetta along with ~30 years of owning/driving nothing but VWs gives me enough credibility here.

Feel yes, but handling and driveability? I don't think so.

I bought a (new) '87 GTI 16V and I still wish I never sold it. But even if I still had it now, I would never drive it day to day. The ride would be too stiff and noisy, the gearchange too combersome, and the power delivery too peaky. What the newest VWs lack in feel they more than make up for in overall competence, performance and ease of use. Somethings a better left in the past, or at least for the weekends.

And honestly, I can care less if they bring that ugly thing here. Still don't see 1 reason to buy it over GTI (which I wouldn't consider to begin with).

wow. so, even though youd buy a gti first, you wouldnt buy either anyway.

For sake of argument, let's say it is. If the base price is $38k-$39k like they say, will anyone buy? Quite a lot for a 2wd, 225hp car (their rumors).

Volkswagen doesnt get the concept that they make nicer everyday cars that should be priced as such not at luxuary prices.

Well I work in a VW dealership and I've heard this same line so many times followed closely by, uh nevermind.... I will also belive it when I see it. IMHO the economics just aren't there to bring over a limited production $40k car when VWoA is fully concentrating on building the Tenn. production facility, working the bugs out of the recent headquarters move to Herndon, Va., and trying to find some clarity in the Routan/Chrysler fiasco. I might be convinced they are considering Polo just to get into this newly flourishing segment in the US but it still isn't economicaly practical either.

Honestly. Are people really this insecure? You entrust your major/minor life decisions to a bunch of keyboard cowboys who were likely pulling their pud to some pr0n five minutes ago?

Article in this months ET states that VWoA will be bringing the Scirocco in 2010 to replace the R32 due to gas mileage and limited production, may be guised as the R20 with AWD and 265HP. Who knows, just passin on the news.

While I'm not a big fan of the current rocco, this wouldn't be a bad idea! Keep it at about the same price as the current R32 and that would really be an excellent car. Offer it with a manually operated clutch and I'd be all over it. Not so much with the DSG.
