Odd request... Cars from Israel« »

You know, Peugeot 206 GTIs, Renault Clio V6s, Seat Cupra (Leon and Ibiza), pre 7 Lancer Evo's, Lancia Delta Integrales, etc. You get the idea.

I've been thinking about completing aliyah when I graduate and haven't gotten around to taking Hebrew classes. Inspire me.

Might wanna PM IsraelGT, I recall he had quite a few threads with 'em. Or at least search through his posts.

Here's one, though. There's a few bits of non-US tasty in there.

Outside of the gulf states and Turkey, Israel seems to be the only country in the region with any stable dealer network (as compared to private importers in other countries). Having been to some other middle eastern countries, I am curious:

Do American cars sell in any significant quantity in Israel?
Did the buying trends in Israel change after Detroit began stumbling in the '70s?
Do drivers in Israel follow the rules or are they like drivers in neighboring countries?
And does the country have much in the way of public transit?

From my trip I know that public transit is pretty available, at least in the Tel Aviv area. As far as driving rules, they do seem to follow them... depending on where you are. In the city, it didn't seem different than Chicago or NYC. Outside, it was civilized but not everyone seemed so versed in the art of transportation.

My question is can I get a Clio V6 there?!?!? I see quite a few other cars and have found some of the scale-forums. No Clio V6s though.

Not sure about that one, but as far as public transportation is concerned, it is easy, because they only need to provide a North-South line. East-West, you can walk across.

VW EV, plug-in Hybrid, and/or 1.4-2.0 VVT&VVL T/dual-charged FSI engines for the US would be useful...

 Re: (MidnightSpecial) »« »

Israel has a weird mix of crap American cars and cool European cars. For every sweet Peugeot or Renault you see, there's an 87 Pontiac Bonnevile lurking somewhere...also, the taxes on cars are insane(a Boxster costs the equivalent of $250,000) which means most cars have very low displacement (think 525s, S320s etc) or are diesel. Subaru's are also really popular. It's a shame there's so many crappy cars because the roads are astounding. Ribbons of perfect black tarmac that just go around and around in hairpins, decreasing radius turns for miles and miles.

If you move there, the best thing would be to buy something really cool by their stands (like a GTI MKV lol) and import it.

My cousin is a police inspector over there and he took me out for dinner when I did Birthright, and his squad car is a Skoda Octavia TDi. That thing hauls ass! He didn't want to wait at red lights, so he hit the sirens and floored it through every intersection...by the seat of the pants meter, it felt as quick as my 2.0T Jetta.

If you take a cab, theres a 97% chance it's a VW/SEAT/Skoda.

To this day, one of my secret car obsessions is to import a middle-eastern-spec Cadillac Seville. The first-generation ones.

They had no smog controls or anything, and much hotter small blocks. Something on 300+ horsepower.

Talk about a fun novelty.

Israel is the only market outside of the US that you can buy a 2008 Chevy Malibu... They also sold the Cavalier .

* Some did. The cavallier did well mid 90's. The mid 90's Malibu did well, Buick sells OK, late eighties early 90's GMC Sfari did well...

* No. Israel was never a big market for large American cars. Mostly small Europeans, and during the 80's Subaru took over.

* They follow the rules, just like in the U.S (the occasional speeding etc.) but the driving style (within the rules) is more agressive.

* There are many buses, which reach anywhere in the country (unprofitable lines are subsidised by the goverment), and soon there will be a light train in Jerusalem.

I would agree with this. The majority of cars are small inexpensive japanese or european imports (think Yaris, Aygo, Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Polo, Lupo, Impreza, etc.); largely due to the cost of fuel and the taxes levied against cars. I would have to say that the car scene is definitely less active than it is in North America, but as these forums will suggest, it is out there, you just have to search for it.

You're better off watching the ladies than the cars anyway.

No Clio V6 in Israel, thought the Clio Sport did pretty well.
There a few 206 GTI, but never made a big impact like the earlier 205 GTIs.
Seat Cupra sold but not in huge numbers.
No Pre Lancer Evo 7's in Israel, it reached the market the same time as the U.S, but Israel got the AYC version, plus most Evos riding around in ISrael are chipped to 360hp.
Delta Integrale are a rare sight.

Sorry Israel has some cool cars, but cars in general are very very expensive in Israel, so most of what you see are Mazda 3 with 1.6L engine, Mazda 6 with 2.0L etc. Taxi cabs use Seat, Skoda TDIs, or natural gas powered Subarus.

They were the first Japanese company to ignore the Arab boycott on Israel. So when they arrived in Israel they offered the winning Japanese formula (reliable, cheap) with no competetion. Add to that the fact that Subaru were among the first to offer FWD.
In the early nineties Mitsubishi joined ranks and took over, and mid nineties Mazda (with 323/protege) became the best seller , and it still is the case.
