High-er flowing cat setup | « » 9:43 AM 11-14-2008 | |
|
Ok.. so I had the Milltek cats for a few years and while they do make a good gain over the stock setup, I've decided to go for even more flow. Looking at the stock & Milltek systems overall the 2 things I wanted to improve upon was the sizing of the tubes and the collector design. Neither look ideal for the power I am trying to make. I've been asked why run cats at all? I'm trying to make as much power as possible while remaining full street mode & legal. Besides, the rasp + volume of no cats is not what I am looking for either. Both the stock and Milltek use 2 inch tubing to the cats. Here are pictures of the collector design of them- STOCK

MILLTEK
I had looked at the Supersprint stuff before but the cats from them are *very* expensive. I had decided to just build my own when as luck would have it a fellow R32 owner here in NJ posted up a new Supersprint testpipe for sale. Great!! Less cost + no shipping = no brainer. There is plenty of room in the testpipe to add my own cats and the design and quality of them is top notch (better than the Millteks in both regards). The Supersprint tubing is 2.25 each VS the stock/Milltek 2 inch..and the collector appears to be off a much more efficient even design. The main pipe is 2.75 inches that flares out to 3 inches diameter at the union with the twin pipes. After doing some research on cats themselves and discussing specs with manufacturers it was pretty evident that the whole ceramic VS metal substrate and cell count really won't matter for all motor. Yes the metal core flows better, but I was told on both the core materials that the flow is limited by the adjoining pipe itself before the core flow becomes an issue. I still went with the metal core for longevity as I have heard of ceramic breaking apart or melting.. not that high heat is an issue here. They are also 2.25 in/out to match up with the larger piping. The guy I bought the pipe from had the tail end of it dropped from 2.75 down to 2.5 so he could install it on the stock catback. I would suggest others to do the same instead of the USP pipe. Look at the angle of the collector and you will see what I mean.
Since I have purchased the Jetex 2.75 catback I will be re-modifying it to run 2.75 straight through.

I am liking the setup you've got going. Should be no problem to weld in those high flows cats and inscrease the end diameter to 2.75" I think it wwill work out great for you and definitely inscrease the flow between the larger diameter piping, high flow cats, and new collector so for you.The thing is you got lucky finding the supersprint test pipe to work with for a cheap price. That won't happen for the rest of us so that is why I'm exploring other options like a new fully stainless steel setup with cats, pipe, collector, etc.

What's the cell count of the cats you are going to use? Also do you mind sharing where you got them? Thanks!

nice. there's also the USP test pipe option. but that is 2" diameter as well. I thought I read that the milltek's were 1.87" dia. (must have been inner) so you should get a lot more flow with this setup!

The only thing I don't like about that placement is the risk of skewing the angle of the flange. Not a huge deal but too much of an angle will be compensated by your tips, and be a PIA to align. I'd have the shop cut the core collectors as short as possible and ensure the angle remains true to OEM, or give them the car so the assembly can be tacked into place and then welded. my 2 cents

The tech at Random told me the pipe size is the limiting factor on CFM, not the cell count nor the substrate type. They also told me their ceramics were 400 cell and the metals 300 cell. I decided to buy the cheapest metal core spun I could find as I am doing this for legality in case of a traffic stop and for rasp killing. I really don't care about how well they actually clean the air. They could be filled with steel wool for that matter. BUT they are OBD2 compliant and come with the needed forms. I paid $95 each shipped for the cats here- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...76446

It only makes sense to do what you are doing and I will be watching this thread closely. I have a B&B system, and I have been thinking about different hi flow cat options lately something similar to this might be my winter project
