This is almost funny given how the B5 was such a good seller (compared to the B2, B3, and "B4") and a critical success. I almost welcome the confirmation of my belief that VW lost the plot with this model (although I didn't think it was selling THAT poorly).

As a B5.5 owner, the current Passat never seemed like a step up from that car. Sure, it's more powerful and a bit roomier, but the quality of the interior doesn't seem any better to me and it never seemed quite as fun to drive as the previous model. It also looks a bit too bloated, but that's a curse most new cars seem to be plagued with.

No surprise. The B5/B5.5 seemed like a step up from the normal midsizers to me. But with so many GREAT competitors out there now, I don't see any appeal in the B6 whatsoever. Give me a nice '09 Maxima or Mazda 6s anyday

 Re: FV-QR (Mazda 3s) »« »

The current Passat offers no real advantage over its Japanese competition. I suppose it might handle slightly better and have a better 4-cylinder but it's much more expensive and not particularly refined. The B5 had a quiet ride and distinctive styling, neither of which the current car has. At least the CC has distinctive looks.

There WILL still be a Passat wagon, though, right? That's one car that has a unique position in the marketplace, because other than it, the only other wagon is the you-must-have-AWD Legacy wagon, with its cramped rear seat.

As a B5 owner, it's hard to love a new Passat. It's a good, solid car, but it's not a B5. Almost nine years later, and nothing turns my head like my wagon. I hate to see the nameplate out of production, but I'm not surprised.

IIRC, the Passat will continue in other markets, and in the US a market-specific midsize sedan will start production at the new Tennessee plant in the next year or two. In an economic downturn, I suppose it's probably a good idea to shed models that aren't selling particularly well, plus it was my understanding that VW intends to be a serious player in the US midsize market with the new car, ie higher volume.

It outsold the Passat sedan last month, 782 to 780.
Let's see how many units it sells once the novelty of it's newness wears off.

The Passat starts at $28,300; the CC starts at $26,970.

And FWIW, it gets better MPG than the Passat.

Looking at the data from 2007, the Passat doesn't appear to be doing too badly in Europe. In fact, the only cars that sold in greater numbers during calendar year 2007 were all A-class or A0-class hatchbacks.

1st: Peugeot 207 (437,505)
2nd: Volkswagen Golf (435,055)
3rd: Ford Focus (406,557)
4th: Opel/Vauxhall Corsa (402,173)
5th: Opel/Vauxhall Astra (402,044)
6th: Renault Clio (382,041)
7th: Fiat Punto (377,989)
8th: Ford Fiesta (300,566)
9th: Volkswagen Passat (300,566)
10th: BMW 3 Series (295,312)

It has been in the top three selling models nationally as long as I remember. In 2007 the only car that outsold the Passat was the Golf.

According to vw.com, there is only 1 trim level for the Passat in 2009. In the past, the Passat generally had 3 trims. In addition, the Passat is only available in an automatic transmission for 2009. So it's obvious that the Passat's time is winding down.

On the other hand, the CC is offered with 4 trims with both manual and automatic transmissions for a few of those trims.

'09 Passat in Canada still has 3 trims, sedan and wagon, 2.0T and VR6 (for the higher trims), manual (2.0T only) across the board, or automatic. Plus the Passat CC. What have you guys down south done to the Passat????

If they make the CC (the Passat CC in Canada) the sedan replacement, they'd better add an extra seat in the back.

You could say that of the current Passat as well. I have both a B5.5 TDI and B6 2.0T (manual) wagon in our stable. The steering feel is radically different between them. I prefer the B6 steering (especially the automatic trimming for crosswinds, road crown, etc!).

I still think the B5.5 is a better made car though, but the B6 is more fun to drive (of course the extra power and stick help...)

As I mentioned in other threads, the Passat makes sense in Europe, although it is only marginally larger than the Jetta - because it is pretty much at the upper size limit of high-volume cars.

In the US, people want to see clear, measurable size differences, and cars larger than the Passat fill the number 1 and 3 spots or so of most cars sold. The B6 Passat never stood out sufficiently from the Jetta, and it can't compete size-wise with the Accord or Camry.

The CC is at least visually "outstanding" (if not spectacular), and its mileage is also respectable.

I might add that end of production does not always indicate end of model line. The Rabbit and GTI production stopped in October - apparently we will get the new ones in late summer, or so.

No, sedans have outsold wagons by more than a factor of four, nationwide, this year.

But yeah, even the Routan, Tiguan, and Rabbit outsold the Passat in November (and as mentioned previously, the CC outsold the sedan, by two).
