 CAT Camshaft cracked in half! | « » 8:14 AM 3-18-2009 | |

I was installing a set of Cat 263/264 cams this past weekend and the longer cam cracked in HALF while pushing down on it to adjust the Cam Caps. 
Anyone else ever hear of something like this happening with these cams? I'm so pissed off. Also, anyone know the contact info for CAT? I cant find it anywhere and their site is very poor.

Not common, but cams break. You're best bet is to talk to whomever sold you the camset.Pushing down with what and how on the cam? They're quite brittle and you're not supposed to put any sort of load on them other then radially (holding the cam, torquing, etc). When installing you need to install the caps in the order that will pull it down naturally.

correct and I installed the caps in the correct order. If they are brittle then mine must have been extra brittle because I merely pushed down on softly to adjust one of the caps. I believe mine are defective and this pisses me off to no end

Ever drop them or have them out of the mfg packaging before install. Be glad it didn't break while the motor was running.
That's a Schrick that broke while running, killed the head. As far as anyone could tell it was a small casting flaw.

cams are by far the easiest mechanical part in an engine to break.the material they are made of is very brittle.this may seem farfetched but its the truth
