Things to avoid when making a car video...« »

Every time I look at vids. on YouTube, there are a few that I find to be just horrid for reasons, of quality, music, etc. So what should a person NOT do when making a video of their car?

Do not use the song "Clubbed to death" or I will club you to death.

Same goes for that song from Requiem For a Dream

Mask the microphone if you have the windows down. No one likes wind noise.

If you're shooting a video of you revving your car's exhaust in your driveway, edit out the part where you walk over and get into the car after pushing the "record" button.

Annoying proselytizing statement.

- Linkin Park. Just no.
- "Artsy" angles.
- Camera shake + zoom. Either unzoom, or find something to lean against.
- Excessive "detail" shots/walk-arounds

I've learned that it's better to have the windows up. The wind noise masks any additional engine sound you get by having them down.

music
long edits.

i absolutely hate that, especially in dyno run videos.

i wanna hear the engine, not some ****ty linkin park song.
and i don't want to sit through two minutes of nothing for a 30 second run!

edit: i honestly didn't see nicktheskater's reply till after i made mine! glad i'm not the only one who feels that way!

I've seen too many videos where things start out as promising, and devolve into a douche-rock suckfest. A lot of these people should be thrown in jail.

What makes a good car video?

Utube reminds me of Andy Warhol's 1968 statement: "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."

Everybody thinks that just any video of themselves is worth watching. Even just them driving normally listening to some song on the stereo with the windows down.

here's a car video contest I've entered:

http://drive.donrosenimports.com/view.php

please vote for my video, "Porsche Dreams" by "Haynie Brothers"

vote for it because it's to the point, exciting and does not have all of things you don't want to see in an online video.

you be the judge. please share your feedback here.

Or failing that, at least wear something besides flip-flops or sandals.

I swear to God, at least 90% of the start-up/exhaust videos I've seen are like that.

Get some Jordans or something, damn...

I disagree with the "no music" comments. the addition of well-placed music adds a lot to certain videos.

here is a perfect example my friend did: Rhys Millen testing the Genesis Coupe at El Toro

http://videos.streetfire.net/v...9.htm

and his latest piece from Formula D Long Beach 2009 (more engine sounds)

I can put up with most anything in car videos except:

Music playing at 75% or higher THROUGHOUT the entire clip. Especially if it is edited in afterwards. Pisses me off SOOOOO bad.

and

Random 5+ second panning shots that pan to nothing, sit there, and then pan back to something pointless because the camera-person is a fricking moron.

EDIT PEOPLE!!! You took the 10 minutes to find some sh~tty song on limewire and put it IN your video....now spend another 10 clipping all the "I'm gonna go postal" inducing moments OUT of 'em!!!!

these same problems should be avoided in OTHER types of amateur filming as well
