Carbon Fiber Interior Fabric. | « » 9:55 PM 7-3-2009 | |
|

i just picked up 2 square yards of this stuff to do the 5-piece silver part of the dashboard in my mini. i posted on the mini forums asking if anyone wanted to GTG and do it... but no response. i even said if they picked up the 3M glue, i'd give them enough of the fabric to do their dashboard, lol. i thnk it looks pretty cool, and its always un-do-able. here's a 3 piece dash done in a newer mini.
anyone down for a GTG on monday to do this? same offer applies. bring 2 cans of the good 3m glue and i'll hook you up with some fabric. to anyone that lives too far away, feel free to share your thoughts on the DIY jobs above

its sort of like vinyl, but sort of super light fabric too. its slightly strechy, so it will make wrapping easy. it's really hard to explain... but it's good stuff.

I'd pay $$$ for someone to do that to my Miata. GD "Piano Black" trim scratches if you just look at it funny. I'm serious.

When I first heard about this stuff I thought it was a little ricey, but I have to admit that the finished product has a cool look. The M3 comes from the factory with a carbon fiber trim option that looks a lot like this.If my car had the wood trim instead of aluminium I'd consider doing it, but I like the contrast the silver gives the interior so I'm going to leave it alone. It looks like a great way to restore beat up trim peices in older cars too.

The fact that it looks like the "dry carbon" from the M3, and not the glossy beveled stick on carbon fiber has alot to do with why the finished product looks so good.

I agree. Even the BMW Performance part's carbon fiber trim for the 135i doesn't look as good because it's glossy.

 theres some more pics.
you can see in some of the pics just how versatile it is. i can't wait, i have monday off, and i'm doing this one way or another. plus, if you put it on exterior body panels, it will make them lighter.

It looks really good when it is first installed, but what about long term durability. Carbon fiber is surprisingly easy to damage without being impregnated with resin. I would think that the material would tend to get scuffed and scratched easily.

FWIW the interior pics of the saab and the bike are NOT carbon fiber fabric. It is carbon fiber laminate that has the sticky stuff already on it. IMO the fabric looks better, alot less shiny http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4351817

It should work well for that. If I were you I'd scrape all the soft touch crap off around the edges before you apply the glue. If you just put it over top of the rubber it might peal away and let the edges start to come up. Worst case, if it doesn't work out, you buy new trim pieces. Eithe way, problem solved.

i dont know and can't tell to be honest. i'm 99% sure its textured cf-style vinyl, actually weaved. then pressed to some high quality sorta-stretchy fabric on the back.

Dude, thank you! $35 a yard? That's not bad at all. I've been looking into options for the M5 interior bits that are, well, less than awesome right now. A yard or two of this stuff could do most all of them too. Any pictures of the silver? Also, any luck/experience using a heat knife with it? or would it disintegrate? The one image with a cut edge didn't look like it frayed too bad.
