that looks legit. you can have bad enough pads and cheap enough rotors that you'll chew the rotors up before the pads... some race compound pads can't be used with stock rotors or they'll eat them alive. i see this as totally plausible.

calipers could stick, pads wore out faster - there are all kinds of ways this could happen.

I've seen this before, too. On a front rotor, with the vanes inside. It was a combination of rotor part failure and a stuck on caliper. I should be able to get pictures tomorrow.

Jesus effing christ, who called BS? All I said was that the right side is still solid - I'm perfectly aware that calipers can seize up. You don't think it's odd that the person wouldn't notice that one was hung up to the point that it ate through the effing rotor completely while the other is apparently fine?
You guys are unreal.

The Grand Marquis--like Ford's other Panthers and quite a few other makes/models--sport a drum-in-hat parking brake setup so that service and parking brake functions are independent of each other.

Since the fronts do 80% of the stopping, and that car is relatively quiet inside, it would be easy to think that the car is still stopping fine and never check the brakes. And it may have been slightly slower than stock due to dragging, but it may have had enoguh power to overcome that to drive at street speeds and not really be noticed that he was pushing the throttle down an addition 1/4 inch over what it woudl normally take if the brake wasnt' dragging. So there may not have been much of anything telling the driver that it needed to be checked earlier on. I mean, do you check your brakes every day even though you think they are fine?

Every day, no. I check them often enough to notice if a rotor is literally being machined away however.
I'm sorry, you can not possibly rationalize any behavior on the part of that car's owner that would justify what is in that photo.
