DIY: Polishing your headlights (takes time to do it right)« »

Well, based off the response from one of my threads after polishing my headlights, I decided it was time to make a DIY the proper way. A big thanks to d.tek for allowing me to use his lenses!

Tool and Supplies:

1. 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper
2. Power drill
3. Polishing drill bit
4. Meguaris Plastic X
5. Turtle Wax Polishing Compound
6. Applicators for the different products
7. Microfiber cloths

Tek's lenses were not too bad to begin with, but here was our starting point.

The first step is to wet sand the lens with your 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper thoroughly to remove the factory clear coat and begin the smoothing process.

Next use the Turtle Wax Polishing Compound to start buffing out the haze. Apply with some elbow grease (your hand and arm will be hurting by the end of this thread ), and let dry.

Now, buff with the power drill and buffing bit. You will notice the lens looks good, but is not perfect. Wimps stop here...

Now apply Meguiars Plastic X and continue to buff by hand. Every so often you can use the power drill when your hand and arm feel as though they are about to fall off.

From this point on, keep applying Plastic X and buffing until you achieve desired results. This is after 7-8 applications... NOTE: You should use the Plastic X 1-2 times per month or as needed to keep the lenses crystal clear!

I hope this has been an insight and will be helpful to your future lens polishing endeavors. Now, enjoy a nice cold one now that you've worked so hard

Sincerely,
ocdpvw

Nice write up.
I use a high speed drill and PlastX myself for polishing plastics.

I found that I could even go down to P1000 and the scratches would still be easily polished out.

The key to the whole task is patience and elbow grease. The more times you use the polish and work it the better the results become.

When I did my lenses they were horrible, so I started with P400, went to P800 then went P1500 then P2000, then buffing compound then a polishing compound then plast-x.

Took me all day but they looked like yours but started from the "Yellow lumpy plastic" stage

PS better clean that rug, your lens got it dirty

funny thing was- i went over each lense literally 5 times hoping it would get clearer with the kit and it went from better to worse

i was thinking of making a DIY also on this but it would have been How to F up your headlights with a restore kit

I wish I would have done a DIY for polishing wheels. Only problem was, my arms were too tired to lift my camera.

When I first saw the pics after I clicked your thread, I thought you had gone back to a golf front lol. Looks good man. Awesome work!

the inside fogs because of liquid in there or condensation, the ouside fogs from debris, driving, etc... you have a leak somewhere on the headlight that needs to be sealed probably.

Question,

How often are you supposed to be buffing it?

I just rebuff mine every time I wash the car. It takes about 2 minutes by hand with some plastic x. This keeps them crystal clear.

yeah i figured as much... im guessing if you used a higher grit you wont have to rebuff them as much. i finished off with 2000 and they were pretty clear before i buffed them out with meguiar's
