Could anyone explain the difference between the new renesis motor versus a 4 rotor rotary like the one in that car?

Sounds freakin awesome.

Renesis is a 2 rotor...this has 4 rotors. Probably 2 renesis (or 12a, or 13b) motors put together with a custom e-shaft.

The difference, to use an analogy, would be like the difference between an I4 and a V8

It's essentially two Renesis engines stacked end-to-end. Rotary engines are actually somewhat modular. It's just like building a sandwich. You're taking a cheeseburger and turning it into a double (or in this case, taking a double cheeseburger and turning it into a quadruple).

Take a simple 2-rotor:

And double it!

Count the plugs! (Note: The above are not 13b/"Renesis" engines. They're older.)

Ah got it. Obviously, now I have to ask....

since they're modular, how many has someone put end to end? Like the max number of motors in a car that could actually accomadate them.

At some point it gets to be a packaging issue... not to mention forging an e-shaft that long properly, correctly timing the fuel and spark plugs, etc., etc. In theory though, like a cylinder engine, you can build one with as many cylinders as you want... so could you build a rotary engine with as many rotors as you wanted.

Impressive. I have heard of 4 rotors, but not 6 rotor motors.
The problem with the 4 rotor motors, are that, a one off, custom 3 pieces crankshaft must be made, and that equals big bucks.

The 10a, 12a and 13b motors were 2 rotor designs.

The 20b cosmo motor was a 3 rotor design. It was basically a 13b with an additional rotor attached. The issue here with the 20b design is that the extra rotor is not mechanically connected via crankshaft, but connected via timing belt. The fact that no crankshaft is used to fuse the 3 rotors together severely limits the longevity of the 20b design.

Addressing the limits of the 20b design leads us to point out the complications of adding more rotors to the basic 13b. The 4 rotor design is called the "r26b".

The Mazda 4 rotor motors are the following, and all used a special crankshaft:

Mazda 3805 4 rotor engine (1963)
Mazda 2002 4 rotor engine (1971)
Mazda 13J-M/13J-MM/13J-L (pre 1990)
Mazda 4 rotor "r26b" (post 1990)

I've never heard of a 4-rotor Renesis. Just the older 13B based double engine.

The Renesis is just an updated 13b.

As I recall, 12As are actually better for 4-rotor setups because their housings are smaller and lighter.

*blink*

Not that I'm a rotary guru or anything closely resembling that, but I can't believe I had never heard that before.

Looking at the motor stripped down, I assume that on the bottom left are two e-shafts... one for the 2-rotors joined together and then a sorta mini e-shaft for the single rotor.
