Cars that Canada got but the US didn't...« »

I was reading a Road & Track from 1984 over the long weekend and came upon an article about cars in Canada that were not sold in the US. Yes, I know about the Asunas and the Pontiac Firefly, etc. I'm talking about unique (read: strange) imports.

Among the cars in the article were:

Hyundai Pony:

Dacia:

Skoda:

Lada:

Innocenti:

I couldn't find any Canadian Dacia pictures online, which leads me to believe that they've all gone to the great beyond, separated from us by an Iron Curtain. A picture of the Skoda was nearly impossible to find as well, as was the Innocenti, but I managed to find both with Canadian plates.

So, 1) what other strange cars made it to the Great White North and 2) how many of them still exist?

Wow, I could see why they wouldn't bring those over. Those things look awful and unsafe.

I believe you mean the Acura EL.

Also, IIRC the US didn't get the City Golf or Jetta.

E36 M3 Euro-spec (Canadian edition, only 45 made!!)

Quote »

M3 Euro-Spec (Canadian Edition)

In 1994 agreements existed between Canada and several countries in Europe which allowed any car authorized in one participating country to legally be sold in any of the others.[citation needed] Though BMW had unveiled the next generation E36 M3 in Europe in 1992, the company felt that the production version would need to be priced much higher for export to North America than the market would allow. While the engineers worked on a less expensive North American version of the E36 M3, BMW Canada seized the window of opportunity: 45 numbered European specification M3 coupes were specially produced and imported into Canada.

Even with a base price of $59,900 (a substantial sum for the day given that the standard equipment list did not include forged lightweight wheels, air conditioning, a sunroof or even metallic paint), all 45 cars were spoken for in just 3 days. Unlike the other special versions of the E36 M3, buyers were free to choose any colors and options they wanted on their cars. The cars all came equipped with the 286 PS (210 kW; 282 hp) 3.0 L inline 6 cylinder engine, vented brakes with floating rotors, glass headlights and other European standard equipment. They were initially delivered to Toronto, then shipped all across the country to the dealerships where they were ordered.

Canada would not see another E36 M3 for sale until two years later, when BMW finally made the American versions of the 1997 M3 available for sale. Forty five Euro-Spec Canadian Edition cars were built, each one having a numbered engraved plaque in both the glovebox and the custom leather case which holds the owners manuals. Only the Australian M3-R was built in lower numbers.

They didn't sell many, but you could get the TVR Griffith here for a while. I've actually seen two on the road.

C250 is new for '10, before that we had the C230.

We've also had various entry-level 3-series BMWs, including the E36 320i, E46 320i, and E90 323i.

Was the 2CV ever sold in the US? I believe it was sold in Canada right up until 1990, albeit in very small numbers.

We also get the B200 and B200 Turbo.

For some reason, our SLK350 can be had with a manual. I don't think that is available in the US anymore.

City Golf:

City Jetta: (now discontinued)

We also got the T4 Transporter diesel in the mid-'90s.

Once while in Toronto in the mid-90s we stayed at a hotel next to a Lada dealership. My dad and I decided to go check it out. The brand new cars on the lot had rust bubbles around the windshield.
