Noted car magazine "BusinessWeek" compiles list of 50 ugliest cars | « » 12:36 PM 11-3-2009 | |
|
http://images.businessweek.com...1.htm| Quote » | Considering how many new cars are rolled out every year, it's no surprise that a few might be just plain homely. There's a chance that certain styles might become fashionable with a dash of retro hip. (Well, maybe not from the 1970s.) But for the most part, the following 50 cars will never be anything but design duds.
|
Besides the obvious vehicles like the Pontiac Aztek and AMC Pacer and Gremlin, it also includes such examples of hideousness as the Ferrari Enzo, Delorean DMC12, and the Lamborghini LM002. Wait... what?

Normally I think responses like this are just typical TCL knee-jerk, but in this case you're right. The New Beetle? Really? I mean sure, it's a cutesy retro design, but... seriously?

If you read their comments, it seems more about the car's "image" than simply looks. But, wait for the irony:
| Quote » | | The perfect car design if fuel, practicality, maneuverability, and class mean nothing to you. One of the most self-indulgent vehicles ever made, the Escalade is for looking rich while you're burning gasoline. |

| Quote » | | The first mass-produced hybrid must have been an exercise in technology, not design. The spoiler is supposed to make the Prius look sporty. But the car still has all the style of a soybean. |
They're criticizing the Escalade for being an evil wretched-excess SUV, and then criticizing the Prius for being aerodynamic...

Author is GRILLE OBSESSED. Every other car he says something sind about the car's grille. WTF is a grille supposed to look like anyways? My favourite was his blurb on the VW Thing noting its lack of grille. a) did the type 1 have a grille? b) what purpose would a grille serve in a rear engined vehicle? c) would the addition of a grille make the design more attractive?

Volvo 240? Really? F U! DeLorean DMC-12? Shut up. Renault Twingo? Eh, it ain't pretty, but it ain't ugly. Toyota Prius? Ok, i actually agree, but: That design isn't from 1997 The spoiler is not supposed to be aerodynamic. Ferrari Enzo? "The Enzo's superfluous curves and angles take flashy overcompensation to a new high. The V-shaped hood, scooped-out doors, and bulbous windshield scream overkill." No, thats called aero.

He's almost right, out of the 50 cars there, I'd say 47 are ugly, one is debatable and two are not.Not to say I don't take exceptions to the list, I love the VW Thing (I'd kill you to own one), we owned and I loved the New Beetle, the El Camino appeals to me because it is so very ugly and hell, I own an Element and can argue its ugly points are highly functional all day long.. But still..Most of these cars are ugly. The only places he gets it wrong are the Delorean, Prowler, and I'd think the New Beetle. Also, functional or not, the Enzo is ugly as sin.

The New Beetle that is pictured in the article is one of the nicest ones that I have seen! How can anyone think this car is ugly? Too cute, maybe, but never ugly. I would also give the PT Cruiser and Chevy SSR passes on similar grounds.

The Author, Damian Joseph, also co-authored this article: http://images.businessweek.com...x.htm for the New Beetle, they wrote "The successor to the wildly popular Beetle, this update gave fans the original's classic appeal—that unmistakable dome shape and "smiling" front fascia—with modern underpinnings. Most dramatic was the repositioning of the car's engine from the trunk to the front of the vehicle, which brought better handling and grip." The final sentence shows that he really knows his stuff!
