CAR LOUNGE! Tell me about the Suzuki SX4 Crossoverrrr!« »

Hey gang, my brother is eyeing the Suzuki SX4 Crossover as a possible replacement for the family hand-me-down Jeep. He'd be interested in an automatic, AWD model. Anyone have experience on these cars? How do they compare to other economy-AWD hatchies in the $1.50-and-a-can-of-Mr.-Pibb price range?

Picture for clicksures.

Note: actual size

Rear seats don't fold totally flat, cargo area is pretty small, but they drive great on anything you'd want to call a road and they look great. Dunno about reliability.

Ah, a TCL darling, whether it wants to admit it or not.

And rightfully so. It's a good value for a little jacked-up hatch with four wheel drive.

FWIW, it got the Intellichoice Lowest Ownership Cost Award in '07, and was found to have the lowest cost of maintenance and repairs by Edmunds in '08.

I wanna see one all rally'ed out, with turbos and exhausts that spit flames and rally lights and meaty tires & stuff.

Works well.
90,000 kms on mine.
Only issue was rear bearings, changed under warranty, although warranty was out (canadian b2b warranty is crap).
Loads (and I do mean loads) of features for the price.
New for 2010: automatic is a cvt( manual now a 6speed), engine now has VVT with 150hp (over 143 and no VVT for mine), new better-looking gauges, seats now fold flat (yay!) etc.
They are amazing value.
And being a Suzuki suffering from the ill-advised GM-Daewoo crappy products (although the sx4 is a full-on japanese suzuki) used ones can be had on the cheap.

I found them to be a blast to drive. Sitting in the drivers seat you get a cool open feeling because you are surrounded by glass. Not many cars give you that these days with all the gunslit windows and sporty swoops/blindspots.

22/30 according to their website. Which is better than any of the Jeeps currently in the driveway, but for a car this size it is a bit striking. Funny thing is, the FWD model gets exactly the same mileage as the AWD, so you might as well get traction with your marginal fuel mileage.

For comparison, the Kia Soul, which only comes in FWD, rates 26/31.

New for 2010: seats now fold flat (yay!)

I haven't seen or heard one thing about any changes to how the rear seats fold on the 2010 SX-4. Is this something you have seen in person?

I do know that even with past year models not all people when reviewing the car are aware that the rear seat bottom cushions fold up towards the front seats (that is hard to explain and sounds wrong when I type it out).

I do know that the seat's fabric, fabric pattern, and shape have been changed, but that is cosmetic refresh stuff. How rear seats fold is more of a major redesign feature.

Pictures would be great.

I have recently added the 2010 sportback (fwd) model to my list of possible future car replacement, just waiting on my local dealership to get some 2010's in stock to test drive one.
I really like them, a fwd car isn't my ideal/dream next car, but out of current fwd 5 door hatchbacks they are one of my favorites.

The next gen. focus may end up in a 5 door hatchback in the U.S. and that would probably be in the top choices for me as well, except I am betting on very poor visibility in the focus.
Visibility that is better than most is one of the SX-4's strengths in my opinion.

yea, but Kias get terrible fuel economy anyways. Even a Kia Rio is no mileage champ. Heck, the diesel version of the SX4 in Euroland will get like 50+ mpg. Why can't a small gas engine be at least somewhat economical? Like the Toyota Yaris, for example, which gets great fuel economy.

And the SX4 is usually driven in FWD mode. So the AWD system weighs a bit more. Why else would it get bad fuel economy? My daily is a TDI, so perhaps I am expecting a bit much from the SX4, but for god's sake, it's 2009, why can't it be made to get better MPG is beyond me.

So does the driver shift the SX4 in and out of AWD? I was under the impression it'd be automatic and not adjustable.

Changed to reflect my thoughts... or bring the corresponding Fiat over.

Given that the bigger, heavier, and much faster (and of course much more expensive) GTI is rated at 24/32, Suzuki has some work to do on fuel economy...

VW EV, plug-in Hybrid, and/or 1.4-2.0 VVT&VVL T/dual-charged FSI engines for the US would be useful...

Err.. define co-developed. It might as well just be a Suzuki product. There was an agreement about licensing the diesel engine, and fiat got to package the car as a result. I wonder if they had an influence in choosing Italdesign to pen the concept though.

I absolutely LOVE my SX4. Very reliable and over 30 on the highway.

You can select FWD mode, auto AWD mode which is FWD until there is slippage, or locked in AWD. Its a pretty neat system I must admit.

So it is always FWD under normal conditions. You shouldn't drive it really fast in AWD lock mode. I forget the max safe speed.

In awd lock mode, the torque distribution is 50/50 until 36 mph, then it switches to awd auto. The car is not just purely fwd in auto setting, as there are a few more things going on. Actually, the jury is still out on all the times that the awd will engage, but it will send up to 50% of the torque to the rear wheels in awd auto as well as lock.

4.0 swap?

My mom looked at them and liked it a lot until she started obsessing over that front quarter window and how weird it was to her.

She ended up in a CPO MkV Jetta 2.5 with the 4-speed auto.

And it's still manufactured by Suzuki, and isn't a Daewoo rebadge. The latter point was what strapontin was getting at, and it definitely is a good one.

Anything you'd like to know about in particular? One thing you will not find a lot of on sx4club.com is people complaining about problems with their cars, or about their cars in general. From a handling standpoint, they are a lot of fun. The power is the most lacking thing, but even though it's slow as a dog, it feels faster than it is and has decent torque. Some bolt-ons help a little bit, but not really worth it if making the car quick is the goal. Just getting the engine a little more responsive makes darting around town a lot more entertaining. The awd is great in the wet, but without a rear sway bar it will create a little understeer compared to the fwd mode. There is a noticeable difference between the two modes in most cornering situations, leading some to believe there is a little power sent to the rear wheels, but nobody has gotten a duty cycle reading on the center coupling yet. Overall the handling is pretty neutral stock. Ride quality on the 16s is great. 17s is pushing it. Someone needs to come out with some dampers for it. I won't touch the suspension until this happens, although there are always the rather soft tein basic coilovers available for it. That's some info from the enthusiast's and modding perspective.
