Power/Torque and Speed! (moved) | « » 12:38 PM 11-6-2009 | |

*moved from 1.8T Engine Forum*Greetings! I am new to these forums so first I will say yo. Anyhow, idk if this is the right place for this but if its not, let it be moved! Well basically I want more power torque and speed in my lil 1992 Jetta GL 1.8 four bangeh! I heard that these things can be fun to race when tuned up right so I might wanna go turbo on it but idk exactly what it can do. Not a huge car person tbh Currently..I believe it has a 9A tranny, a RV Block, 256 CAM 1/4" exhaust. Idk how much of that stuff is stock but I know thats what it has. I also *think* my compression might be low due to the clicking sound it makes when it runs >.> But it passed DEQ just fine w/ a new catty so it must not be to bad. I will do a compression check later I think. So, what can I do? Searched and didint find my prob. Any help would be great! Thanks! Modified by JoggerNot at 8:48 PM 11-6-2009

I say learn with what u got, make it run perfect, whore it out for all the power u can get, then move on to better and faster things once youve got an understanding of what u want to do and can do.....

The first and best advice i can give you is get what u have now running perfect..Ull be surprised on how much extra power ur car is being robbed of by not having it tuned properly..No use on spending money for upgrades if they r not going to work cuz your motor is not up to par.....Do all ur maintenance first!!!! Check all ur electronics and grounds Definitely check ur compression if u have doubts on it Check to see if ur A/F ratio is within standards Then small bolt-on upgrades cold air intake, bigger cam, exhaust(if its 2 1/4 u got thats fine), and a chip to compensate for upgrades Bigger mod options, motor swap, p&p the head and intake, lighten and balance motor internals, lightened flywheel, better clutch and pressure plate, ect...................its endless just depends on what ur looking for..

U need some pistons in the 8.5:1 cr range, turbo exhaust manifold, turbo, down pipe, plumbing, intercooler, bov, clutch, pressure plate, fueling and lots of money for dyno time and tuning........

I suggest swapping the motor for a 16V... I've owned both and a built up 16V has butt-loads of torque and it's a lot of fun. and you can get significantly more power from a 16v... heck you probably would be satisfied with the stock motor (for a little while)... a close ratio tranny is always fun too... but then you lose the MPG.my 16V was ported and polished, high compression, piper cams, quaife differential, and a close ratio transmission with a tall 5th gear (good for highway cruising but not highway race'n) and a standalone... it could ALMOST keep up with my M3... the gti had the weight advantage.

what kind of tune up things are we talking about ?So far Iv got compression/timing all my electrical works (to the best of my knowledge) fluids changed etc. What else should I do? And to piggy back on my thread here, whats it like doing a re-build? I think I would just like the knowledge of learning how to do so but I don't want to screw my car up >.> Thanks

Well he wants more power torque and speed.... there's only so much you can do with these 8V... and yes.. a 16v "might" be more powerful... which is what he's looking for...but IMO bringing a NA motor into boost is A LOT harder then swapping a motor... AND it's significantly more expensive... unless you guy 16v motors for $2k+.... with the 16V he gets the power boost... and if he wants to learn about motors he can mess with the 8v he pulled out... it was simply a suggestion... he's gunna do what he's gunna do.and it sounds like he's going to do a compression test first.
