Honda coffee can exhausts not cool anymore? | « » 8:51 AM 11-7-2009 | |
|
Where have all the fart-cannon exhausts gone? A strange phenomenon is taking place in NJ. Most of the slammed, souped up Hondas around here are running stock or similarly quiet exhaust systems. Are they tired of being made fun of? Afraid of the cops? Embarrassed? Anyone notice this in their area?

silences the exhaust note. Exhaust gas passes through the muffler twice before it exits.

The design supercools the exhaust gases flowing through it causing naturally the occurring steam present in said exhaust gases to condense out as liquid water causing the muffler to rust from the inside out with the quickness. As a muffling device, the "muffler" design is highly suspect. A larger volume of conventional internal baffling will attenuate the sound of the exhaust gases flowing through it while an extra run of smooth wall piping running between to smaller exhaust baffles likely won't.

it actually works really well in silencing the exhaust without restricting it. A friend of a friends is running a Replica of the Mugen (made by OBX), and his car is much quieter then prior to installing the new muffler. He ran very similiar 1/4 times before and after (highest trap speed was with this muffler installed actually). Not saying the muffler added power, as the runs were on diff days (diff. temps)...but it def. silences the rasp and exhaust note without sacraficing much if anything.

I.... You.... Oh bother where to start..... The impact a restriction has on exhaust flow and thereby engine performance decreases the farther back in the stream the restriction is. Also, unless his car is highly modified and FI there isn't a muffler in the world that is going to provide a noticable decrease in his 1/4 miles times or trap speeds.

Not to threadhi-jack but I'm equally annoyed with these and they are still live & in full force on many domestic trucks. IMO it wouldn't be so bad if these owners spent the kind of money that many import tuners spend on their exhaust and get a "tuned kit" but most domestic truck guys go down to the local muffler barn and have old Jimmy put 'em on a Flomaster and some duals with crumble bent piping. I've got three different annoying trucks on my street and they sound like absolute crap.

That's the thing though, one of the cheap fart cans costs less than a stock replacement exhaust in many cases. That's also why you see the myriad of stock Civic DX sedans with low quality "altezza" taillights. They're cheaper than stock ones.

maybe the australian lady finally showed up in NJ to deliver justice??http://www.themotorreport.com....-foam/
"Forget the exhaust, those tacky aftermarket tail lights are crime enough. Take ‘er away, officer. The concept of vigilantism is one many of us struggle with. We all want to have faith in the law, and in the police force to uphold it, but sometimes you’re left with the feeling – no matter how irrational– that the only solution is take the law into your own hands. An eye for an eye, primal justice, a disabled ‘Milo tin’ exhaust for interrupting a peaceful Sunday morning breakfast at the beach. Going by the name ‘Phantom Expander’, the vigilante has been filling the exhausts of unnecessarily noisy cars with expanding foam. And of course, the main perpetrator in this category is the aftermarket exhausts found on the ‘90s models ‘boy racer’ 1.5 to 1.8 litre non-turbo Honda Civics and Mitsubishi Lancers. Apparently the foam needs a good four hours to set, which has allowed many of his victims to escape serious damage, having enough time to clear the foam from their exhausts before it hardens. No doubt the Phantom Expander’s illicit activities will come to an end eventually, with the only question being whether it’ll be at the hands of Johnny Law, or Johnny Cricket Bat."
