Why can't women drive and my theory on how to fix it | « » 5:28 PM 11-7-2009 | |
|
We all know the stories, jokes, and actually experienced it on the road. Every time I see something stupid on the road occur, its 90% of the time a woman. I feel that men are riskier drivers (thus higher insurance rates) but we do ish on purpose. I feel that women just arent alert or pay attention to the rules of the road. TWO exceptions though, A girl I knew in highschool and my girlfriend. I pondered why I trust their skills but not women in general. My theory: They both learned how to drive using manual cars. Both girls had to first master the art of 3 pedals to even get going which propelled them in a more alert state of mind behind the wheel which has translated to better drivers even though they both use automatic SUVs now. If I have a daughter, or kids in general, I will first teach them how to drive using a beater stick shift vehicle. Opinions??

I think that learning how to drive with a standard does create more aware drivers, but not better ones. My most recent ex drove a standard Maxima and driving with her was terrifying. It was her tendencies that were scary, not the actual way she operated the car.

Oddly enough, I have a female friend that has brought up this very thing as it applies to drivers regardless of gender. Learning to drive in a stick shift forces you to be much more aware of what is happening around you. You have to know what speed you're traveling to be in the right gear if you need to speed up, etc.... I don't think it has anything to do with women in particular. Plenty of self absorbed oblivious ass hats around of both genders.... most of them driving automatics.

I agree 100%. I think a good way to force younger drivers to stay alert while driving would be to require driving a manual for the first, say, three years of licensed driving, unless, of course, they have some disability that means they can't drive a manual. It's nothing to do with gender (the vast majority of people I know who are my age of either gender can't drive a manual), it's just a matter of being forced to pay attention in order to drive at all.

I seriously doubt this "women can't" stereotype. Just because motorsports is a male dominated sport and because you're a good driver and you're a guy, doesn't mean women are bad drivers. For every time I had a woman driver drift into lane, unknowingly cut me off, drive 10 under, and etc. I have had a guy driver do the same thing. Most of the girls I know are great drivers. Not great rally/drifto/F1 drivers but great, safe overall drivers, and I know some guys that are not only douchebags but don't know a single thing going on around them on the road and end up getting honked at every single time I'm in the car with them. Oh and I know a girl that learned how to drive on a stick and had a manual MKII Golf as a first car. She is a terrifyingly bad driver, but still not as bad as the douche that drives the red lifted diesel Dodge truck that I used to know. And the best driver I've been in a car with? A girl I've known since 5th grade that was the token class ditz and drove a white auto Camry. She actually checked her blindspots, used her turn signals and merged on to the freeway a reasonable speeds.

My girlfriend is a pretty smart girl, I think she drives pretty good. The only thing I don't like is that she drives too close for comfort behind people sometimes. It's not that I don't trust her, its just that I personally like to have and leave more room for others.

The reality is very few people in this country are good drivers. The difference is that Men generally *think* they're good drivers. Women generally don't even consider the issue at all.

For a lot of people just controlling a 2300 pound death machine for the first time is enough to think about at first. I think I'm a better driver for starting out on an automatic because it allowed me to focus on road signs, speed limits, and pedestrians instead of if I'm rev-matching or what gear would be optimal for my exit speed out of a turn.

Women would be much better drivers if auto manufacturers simply built cars with domestic designs they can relate to.

Just to play devil's advocate though: why do guys have higher insurance rates for the first ~10 years or so of their driving career?I see equal numbers of men and women doing dumb things. I've learned to welcome them now. VW's thoughts on the matter?

It's a good thought, and I kind of agree with it having been / being a big thing for me, but there are a lot of horrible, horrible drivers who have manual transmissions. Driving stick doesn't really "force" you to pay any more attention to anything other than what you're doing yourself, and there are a lot of people who really don't think about what gear they should be getting in, just which one they need to change to when they need to - downshift when the engine starts to do this "bogging down" thing someone told them about or when they're in too high of a gear to accelerate satisfactorily, and shift at "x" RPM or when a light comes on. There are a lot of us who might credit driving a stick as being something that we feel made us good drivers, but there are still some really bad drivers who "know" how to drive a manual transmission car.

i think that driving stick in a -city- environment has the advantage of frequently re-centering your mind on the fact that you are driving. but thats about it. i know plenty of bad drivers, stick or auto, and i know plenty of people who drive stick badly in addition to that (and i feel bad for there throwout bearing, synchro's, etc.) the bottom line is that being a good driver comes down to not being negligent of the fact that your driving. that means not doing things like texting, drinking, and the obvious, but also sometimes something as simple as not searching your ipod for the next song. do i think that automatics facilitate these activities: yes. do i think that driving stick is the answer: no. cuz lemme tell you what, i can sure as hell text and pull off a heel toe at the same time.
