 Hyundai unveils its first direct-injection engine« »

Really the first ever for Hyundai?

http://www.themotorreport.com....ngine/

Quote, originally posted by The Motor Report »
HYUNDAI THIS WEEK revealed its first-ever direct injection engine, the 2.4 litre Theta II GDI four-cylinder petrol engine.

Based on the existing Theta II engine available with the current generation Sonata, the Theta II GDI is scheduled to debut in the Sonata’s successor next year.

With a compression ratio of 11.3:1, the new direct injection engine produces 148kW at 6300rpm and 250Nm of torque at 4250Nm - up from the regular port-injected engine’s 128kW and 225Nm.

hyundai_theta-ii-gdi_engine_02 Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing joins the Theta II’s updates, bringing improvements to the engine’s breathing, enhancing fuel economy and lowering emissions.

Fuel efficiency is said to be improved by around 10 percent, however Hyundai is awaiting final certification on the new engine’s fuel consumption.

Hyundai says its GDI technology, developed over 46 months at a cost of AU$158 million, will be applied across the carmaker’s model range (and likely Kia) over the coming years.

Currently available with the R2.2 diesel engine only, the Santa Fe SUV is expected to receive the new Theta II GDI engine late next year - although it’s too soon to know if it will be offered in Australia.

The power output is on par with other car makes. Looks like Hyundai is catching up fast. Good for them.

All I want is if they can bring over their diesel engines to the states.

Typo? 250Nm at 4250Nm?

It has been reported this engine in the new Sonata is expected to be class-leading in fuel economy: 23/35

Quote »
The four-cylinder engine powering Hyundai’s upcoming 2011 Sonata sedan will get an expected 35 mpg highway, the automaker announced. This bests any other midsize sedan on sale today; its closest competitor is the Ford Fusion, which in its S trim level can get 34 mpg highway with an automatic transmission. However, the Sonata will also pack 200 horsepower and 186 pounds-feet of torque, which will make it the most powerful four-cylinder in the class, as well.

The engine is the company’s first use of direct injection, and it will be teamed to a continuously variable automatic transmission. It was designed in Michigan and will be built in Alabama. The 2011 Sonata goes on sale in the first half of 2010.

Not yet. Rumored that the Genesis V8 will get a boost to 5.0L and receive DI at that point sometime in the near future.

Saw a Genesis sedan on the freeway. Think it was dropped a bit, looked absolutely stunning. The badge-less front might start a new trend.

New wheels for the 2010s too. Not amazing but way better than the ugly 09' ones.

On that note, C/D has reported the '10 Genesis V8 will receive a 10hp bump to 385hp. No sacrifice in fuel economy, still rated 17/25 (which is class leading, I believe).

http://blog.caranddriver.com/s...-bump/

With the new Sonata I4 expected to achieve 35mpg and an output of 200hp, plus this, gone are the days of lousy power output and mediocre fuel economy from Hyundai engines, especially the larger ones

The 4th-gen Sonata, with the old Sirius 4-cylinder (18/26) and Delta V6 (18/25) got pretty mediocre MPG. Interestingly, in looking up these numbers, I found out you could get the 4th-gen V6 with a stick-shift.

The engines in the current Sonata has always been pretty competitive. At launch the 2.4-liter Theta had 162 hp and 164 lb-ft; it is now rated at 175 hp and 168 lb-ft. Our '07 (with the 4-speed automatic) was rated at 24/33 (now 21/30). We get ~25 MPG driving it around the 'burbs and 30-35 MPG on the highway depending on speed. The current incarnation with the 5-speed automatic is rated at 22/32 (25/35 under the old ratings).

Simply put, greater power, better fuel economy.

Most of what we see in the press indicates that power and efficiency are the big reason to go with direct injection, however, the SAE pubs I've seen indicate that reduced NVH and lower wear on the bearings are the reason they want to pursue direct injection.

your engine only needs a certain amount of gas to run. The problem for years was that the delivery system couldn't really handle 'tiny' amounts... and when it needed to deliver a LOT, it sprayed a LOT

now we can meter and deliver fuel in micro elements when needed and we can finally atomize the fuel under high pressure at load.

so, if you can use less gas and maintain near stoich AF ratios, you get power and economy

DI engines can have higher compression ratios since the fuel injected directly into the cylinder has a cooling effect. This new Theta has an 11.3:1 ratio — presumably on regular gas — which is quite a bit higher than average, especially on 87 octane.

The Genesis looks lower in person than in pics IMO. As far as the wheels go, the wheels are the same for 2010. The one on top is of a V6, while the one on the bottom is the V8. Aside from the wheels, the only visible clues you're looking at a V8 are the chrome lower door rub strips, black dual piston calipers at the front, and 4.6 badging.

And I still quite like the 18" V6 wheel design. They look far better in person, but of course I'm biased.

Yup. Autoblog also reported this as well. 2010 Genesis V8 Thread: http://forums.thecarlounge.com...60094

I have to say, I find it a bit odd that they made this running change so close to the start of the model year. If I bought a 2010 V8 Genesis a month ago I'd be pissed to find out about these changes.

On the other hand, I'm glad they aren't resting on their laurels with the Genesis and seem committed to keeping it up to date. The 2011 should see a few changes as well, with Hyundai's in-house developed 8-speed automatic, upgraded engines (DI??), and a slight stying refresh (redesigned grille, integrated exhausts, etc.). One could only hope they see fit to give more supportive seating and a sportier steering wheel w/paddle shifters to go along with the extra power.
