 I can't believe that is a _________ .« »

I noticed a 90's Buick Riviera on the road the other day, and I remembered how when the car first debuted I said on more than one occasion, "I can't believe that is a Buick". Yeah, I know, it looks rather bland now, but at the time it was a pretty striking vehicle, and definitely out of the norm as far as other Buicks of that era. So, I thought it might make for an interesting thread, if others have had similar reactions to other cars.

Yeah, yeah, I can see the Panameras and Cayennes coming over the horizon already.

In the late '50s and early '60s, the Karmann Ghia was always assumed to be anything other than a VW. If one didn't know, they never assumed it was. People would usually guess Italian, which the styling certainly is! VW even had ads that said as much. "Karmann Ghia, the VW in an Italian smoking jacket"! There were others as well. They even made a 'debut' 8 years or so after they came onto the market.

The Vixen Recreational Vehicle, designed by Bill Collins, was built from 1986 until 1989. A total of 578 Vixen motorhomes of three different types were built: the Vixen 21 TD (1986-1987), Vixen 21 SE (1988-1989), and Vixen 21 XC (1986-1987).

I'm sorry Larry, but I know someone who has had three of them, and based on the lack of quality, I'm going to have to disagree.

These cars are notorious for being driven by their owners until the doors fall off...which usually happens around 100,000 miles. Really, how many cars built in the last 30 years have the doors literally fall off at around 100K?

I'll see your three, and raise you another 3. My folks had 2 Buicks that went far past the 100K figure, as well as my wife's '92 Ultra. They were 3 of the most trouble-free, well-constructed automobiles I've seen. Touché!

BTW, all the doors remained attached securely to the bodies at all times.

Buicks, or Buick Rivieras? Because the last Riv (and its lone platform-mate, the Oldsmobile Aurora) was not a quality piece.

And I'm not getting into the driving experience here on those cars, either, which was uniformly terrible.

These things came out right around the time I became cognizant of cars, and I still have trouble believing they were built.

The whole notion is mind-boggling: a compact pickup truck with street-tuned suspension, AWD, a severely under-rated turbo V6, and the thrust to dust Ferrari's? From General Motors?! The whole turbo era at GM (Buick Regal GNX, Firebird Turbo, Syclone/Typhoon, and even oddballs like the turbo Monte Carlo) seems so hilariously incongruous with the Celebrities and Silverados that we associate with that era today. Truth stranger than fiction.

Reading! You should try it some time before posting.

First off, I didn't say anything--reillymk2 did:

Quote, originally posted by reillymk2 »
I can honestly say that I think that buick is one of the low points in american carmaking.

Secondly, if you read his particular statement, he was clear referencing the Riviera:

The second that is referring to the car in the subject of the OP, AKA, the Riviera.

Finally, pull up any old Consumer Reports showing the reliability rankings of Rivieras, then try to tell me its reliable. Go ahead, I'll wait. Oh, and don't give me some bullsh!t argument that CR is "biased" just because you don't like the data.

This could be read as either:

I can honestly say that I think that particular buick (the Riviera) is one of the low points in american carmaking.

or:

I can honestly say that I think that buick (the company) is one of the low points in american carmaking.

Either way, I bet there were many people that looked at that Riviera and thought, " I can't believe that is a Buick!"

I personally love the looks of that car from every angle except directly from the rear.
