I have never owned my own brand new car. Who else has never owned a new car? I have purchased a new car in my name, but it was not for me (it was for my in-laws).

Why should I lose the biggest portion of the value when I can just as easily, if not easierly, get a nice used example?

That isn't always the case (although admittedly most of the time it is). Some cars have extremely low depreciation and savings are negligible. See: MINI Cooper, Fit, etc.

I've a 2005 Hyundai Sonata LX that is in my name, but is not mine (it was for my parents).

I've owned and driven my 2007 RX8 since new. I'd like to sell it now because I'm tired of car payments.

Add to that the trouble finding an unabused example of some cars, like the WRX, STI, EVO, SRT4....

Bingo. At the time SRT4s hadn't depreciated very much as they were still pretty new. I felt much better paying $20,000 for a brand new one then paying $18,000 for one that has potentially been beaten to death in the 10k miles that the first owner had it.

Technically, I've bought two new cars - but have I ever owned them? No - never made it to paid off on the first one, and just financed the second one when I bought it in July.

unless i am some mega-wealthy millionaire someday, i would NEVER buy a new car. two reasons:

1. i cant stomache the idea of the huge depreciation value of buying something new -vs- how much it is actually worth a year or two down the road.

and

2. every car i like is way too expensive brand new!! I prefer to wait and get it used 2-4 years down the road. much better value IMO

I only buy new. My family is cursed. Anything that a normal person would have no problems with, explodes when we touch it. From Microwaves to brand new BMWs, nothing ever goes quite right.
Not having a warrenty would be a killer for us.
The head gasket on my forester alone was about 1/3rd of what the vehicle was worth when it needed replacing due to the nature of the flat 4.

However, we seem to be blessed with superhuman negotiation skills. I bought a 2009 Civic SI, but just couldn't get used to the quirks so I traded it in for my Genesis Coupe. I got the Gen Coupe at dealer cost, and only $500 less than I paid for my Civic SI, after driving it for 5 months.

If you buy a car that depreciates VERY fast (like an RX-8) then you can snag one that still has a warrenty with plenty of miles left. I'd do that. (though I can almost guarentee I'd be replacing apex seals left and right)

Last time I bought new.

Pros and Cons for both.

Free Maintenance (VW,BMW,Volvo) to original owner
Lifetime Powertrain Warrenty (Jeep) to original owner

CPO is also nice and at times may be better than a new car warranty.

3 new and 5 used. Honestly, the best part about buying new is the first 3 - 6 months until you get a ding, rock chip or whatever. After that, you pretty much feel like you're driving a used car afterwards.

Generally speaking, you can usually get lower financing on a new car than you can with a used car. Also, if the dealership has a car left over that they can't get rid of, you can sometimes get it well below invoice.

But but but buying a new car is financially reckless ! Do you know how much of a hit you've taken in depreciation !

I feel the same way - buying new is for something you plan to keep a while, which is why I was willing to shell out for the Z4 M Coupe brand new. There's a lot to be said for owning a car that you know the complete history of with no questions or worries, as well as getting to enjoy the entire warranty period.

X2....And I think cpo is way better then buying new especialy if you buy the car before the 50k mark and still have another 50k or 3 years left in the warranty

the only reason i bought my 09 honda fit S brand new was because of cash for clunkers. my daily e30 was worth nowhere near $4500. ...and if you're thinking of buying a used fit, you might as well buy brand new.

Of the cars I've had a hand in purchasing (either for myself, or for my wife), 4 have been used, and 3 have been new.

We've bought our last 3 cars new, but I think the next one may be used. We've been keeping our cars 10+ years after buying new (gotta amortize that expense), and I'm finding that I get bored after the much time. Buying used, I could swap the car out earlier and not bear as much financial pain.

Regardless, new or used, no more car payments for me, ever.

Hell, I buy cars because I want them, not because of their perceived monetary value. Buying a car is not an investment, save for a very few isolated examples.

Ironically, for about a year, our Fit was worth more on the used market than what we paid for it brand new.
