It's not confirmed, but that's when the AT&T exclusive deal is up, and Qualcomm has a chip that allows world quad-band GSM + CDMA now, which would let Apple make one device that worked everywhere and with multiple US providers. Looking possible.

imo, Att is limiting iphone sales right now. So they will have to pay up big time if they want to keep the iphone exclusive to them. If it becomes available on other networks I would expect quite an exodus from att once contracts come due. iirc it's something like 3 of 4 new att contracts are iphones, the others are probably cheap phones for the kids of parents that purchased iphones.

Ditto. But I wonder if Verizon is going to have the same problems AT&T does after the CDMA to GSM move.

Oh, it will have issues, I'm sure. I have no issues with AT&T coverage here in Boulder, so I'm probably going to try to hold out for 4G. The problem AT&T has (or one of them), is that for GSM, implementing 3G requires a hardware update, while for CDMA it's software, which explains Verizon's much greater coverage.

A separate issue is that the iPhone is by far the bandwidth-thirstiest smartphone out now, and that taxes the network in places with a lot of yuppies. Verizon, as I understand, doesn't offer unlimited data plans, and doesn't have any phones that use nearly as much in the first place. Apple doesn't want to let anyone sell the iPhone without unlimited data, so if Verizon does offer that, their network will quickly become much more taxed than they're used to.

Personally, I wish we hadn't sat on our hands for a year plus delaying the analog TV shutoff, since that bandwidth is what the 4G cell network will occupy, so we could have it already if people who wanted to get broadcast TV didn't bitch up a storm.

If you have few bars, it's coverage. If you have plenty of bars but still get "Call Failed", that's an issue of bandwidth.
