 Common automotive misconceptions thread« »

List common misconceptions that even automotive enthusiasts fall for.

I'll start:

Misconception: "All Buick Grand Nationals came in black only"

Truth: The first year GN was 2-tone

I have my very own little fanclub here that follows me around.

Not sure if this is common or not, but my friend (a female) thought that turning on the A/C could not only make the air colder, but hotter too if you combined it with the heater.

Well, when we say AC most people think making air cold. But that's actually not what AC means. Air conditioning is the cooling and dehumidification of indoor air for thermal comfort. In a broader sense, the term can refer to any form of cooling, heating, ventilation, or disinfection that modifies the condition of air.

She's not as dumb as you think.

I was behind a sweet fartcanned SE-R the other night in the WRX. Even with such a power adder as that, he was far from chirping third.

FWIW, my brother-in-law tried to tell me last week that a non-VTAKS y0! '96 Accord he bought wasn't all that quick, but he was able to break it loose in first and second and sometimes even third. Since he knows a ton about cars, who am I to argue?

FWIW, the GN in the OP is hideous...black is so much better!

People seem to think that it's ok to drive in the left lane. Not sure where or how this misconception started, but I see it in about 50% of the cars on the road around here.

Misconception: (in almost every case) New air filters, platinum spark plugs, and "hi-performance" spark plug wires increase horsepowar!!!

Truth: They restore lost performance.
--------
Misconception: Brake rotors warp

Truth: Most cases of "warped rotors" are due to uneven pad material transfer.
--------
Misconception: Crown Victoria Police Interceptors are superdupercharged NOSMONSTARS!!!

Truth: They might have beefed up suspension, different gearing, and better brakes, but not +100HP like your friends neighbors cousin "who is a cop" would like you to believe.

Lancia specialized in narrow-angle V4 powerplants for many years, beginning in the 1920s. Their V6, which debuted in the early 1950s, was pretty much the "father" of all V6 automotive powerplants. Ford offered a V4 in its German lineup during the 1960s and 1970s, and Saab purchased these engines to replace the 2-stroke triple in their 96, beginning in 1967.
