 A4 trunk space... bicycle friendly?« »

Are there any cyclists here?

I'm a fairly hardcore mountain biker... some road and cyclocross... mostly cross country mountain, not a big bike downhiller.

I've been riding the crap out of my 29er hardtail singlespeed and 29er full suspension geared bike. I used to be able to get either bike in my old 97 Jetta trunk with the seats locked in place, if I took both wheels off and the seatpost out. It was great. Total stealth for parking in bad neighborhoods in Oakland, CA. I could throw my bike, wheels on top, duffel bag with my helmet, shoes, camelbak, etc, and nobody was the wiser.

I got my wife a 99 A4 Avant. No frickin way my bike fits behind the back seat with the wheels off under the tonneau cover. Not even close. I was considering a B6 Avant until I came across this rub. If the bike won't fit in a sedan either, I'll probably just go with an Avant anyway.

Has anybody tried this with a B6 sedan?

I have a hitch rack for my GTI and the wife's avant but there isn't a lock or cable strong enough for me to let my $4k bike out of my sight for more than a few minutes.... and roof racks... same thing... plus they suck ballz, jack up the finish, suck lots of gas, and make lots of wind noise. I already went that route for years, and I don't really wanna go back.

Just to throw a pic of my bike in, here's my main ride:

Big wheel bikes rule.
