 vw kit car - mk4« »

Mark smith here...I am the owner of factory five racing and figured it was time to share my latest project with the main stream vw crowd on this forum.

Over on http://www.tdiclub.com in the tdi conversions section, we have been finishing up a conncept mid engine kit car based on the vw golf/jetta mark4. What started as a discussion on http://www.ffcobra.com (thread is called "mark smith, time to talk")which is an independent discussion forum that mainly talks about factory five racing products and builds, has evolved into a new company that will be manufacturing this kit.

Soooo...I am done positioning the tdi powerplant in a mid engine layout and am doing the vr6 powered version next week...here is where we need the help. I need to make sure that the aftermarket turbo kits fit in the new position. What kits are you using and how do you like them?

If forum members with experience and interest with the various kits could let us know their likes and dislikes...especially of the cheaper 800 dollar kits on ebay..I will buy one and engineer the room for it in the car.

Project can be followed on http://www.ffcobra.com http://www.tdiclub.com or my twitter page at http://www.twitter.com/factoryfive

Let me know what you think and thanks ahead of time.

How about links to the actual threads?

Oh, and this is likely going to get locked, as it could be seen as advertising from a non-forum sponsor. But I hope it does not.

Hi Mark,

Each VW engine has its own technical subforum on vwvortex. The main heading where you can find them is http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeromain?id=3

Within those specific forums you'll find a lot more information on aftermarket turbo kits than you will here in TCL, where it's more of a general automotive interest forum.

Good luck with your project, I really want a '33 Coupe!

glad I could be the cause of you getting some action later

in regards to your question about Forced Induction in the vr6, are you using a 12v vr6 (91-2002 corrado, mk3, early mk4) or a 24v vr6 (03-.... TT, late mk4)?

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=113

word of advice. Be sure to clearly state who you are and you know nothing of VWs. Vwvortex is notorious for telling people to go search and being generally annoying

I know for a fact the 12v vr6 is pretty robust. you can easily run 10-12 psi on a stock longblock and not worry about blowing anything up. Trannies can hold around 400whp no problem too as well as the clutch but uprating the parts is not a bad idea. Also advise to do the timing chains and guides

Cheers

I have no personal experience with it, but the kinetic turbo kit seems pretty popular: http://www.kineticmotorsport.c....html

I used to have a VR6 swapped mark 2 Jetta gli, and I would have probably gone with this kit if I had had the money to turbo it

Hope this helps. btw, tha car ^^^^ looks UH-mazing!

And let me just say, with the falling prices of MKIVs these days, a $10k kit sounds extremely appealing if it comes out looking anything like what is posted above. Id love to build one.

Mark-
Welcome to our forums - we are very glad to have you here!

We do have advertising regulations and such that prohibit businesses from selling products without registering, but we are also always very glad to have industry folks like yourself here. As long as you're not marketing anything, I'd think that everything would be fine. I'll pass word that you're here on to our staff to let them know.

Welcome, and thanks for stopping in!

I am positive this is already being done. A kit car builder has a mid engine format that uses a few 4 and 6 cyl engine options. I have to dig up the website, but they advertise in Kit Car in the back all the time. They currently have a vr6 and 1.8t's that have been bolted in. Let me dig up the name and the website, The car is a small mid engine design with a no roof and they list all the FWD engine options that fit that range from vw, ford, and I think toyota work.

 chopped gtm »« »

The guys on ffcobra that "chopped" the gtm pic would be bummed if they heard you say "just" a photochopped gtm

They have been photchopping with my guidance using actual dimensions that i have been giving them. Combine this with actual glass measurments etc and you get a photochop that is pretty close to the actual car that i am building down the road in a separate building...it really has been a collaborative effort so far.

the photochop crowd starts with a pic while i start with an actual gtm body...they cut the photo...i cut the body with a saw..they change and discuss...i implement the changes...

If you like the design or have some changes that you would like to see..let me know..now is the time since the plug will be well underway in january.

thank for the welcome...this is my first vw since my baja bug in highschool..i guess that could be considered my first "kit" car:)

If you can, you might want to change the name of the thread to something like "New Generation VW kit car" or some such. I clicked expecting something like "Can anyone tell my why my Bradley GT only gets about 3000 miles before the engine cooks itself"?

The car sounds good. What are your weight targets? A TDi drivetrain in a lightweight vehicle would be slick. Do you know if there are differences in accessory dimensions on early TDi and Pumpe Deuse versions? Will that be a potential pitfall?

Is the deletion of that side scoop going to be a problem for airflow to the engine? And how would the engine be accessed? Im not sure how far along you are in the design phase yet, so Im just curious.

I also had a baja bug in highschool although it wasn't quite as long ago for me
