POLL: Fuel filler door: better on driver's side, or passenger's? | « » 1:30 AM 3-13-2003 | |

So some cars have the fuel filler door on the driver's side. Others have it on the passenger's side. Why is this, which do you prefer, and why?

I really don't have a preference either way, but I notice I pull in a lot farther away from the pump when it's on the passenger side than I do when it is on the driver's side (almost twice as far as I would in car with it on the driver's side; 4-5 feet as opposed to 2 feet or so.)

I don't care on which side as long as gas is not that ridiculously expensive.

Passengers side simply cause less cars have it on that side. If you pull into a gas station on a highway they go one way in some places and the lines for the pumps with the gas on the left and usually longer. Other then that it really doesn't matter.

I think it's better on the driver's side to provide consistency with traffic laws (i.e. stay to the right of a traffic island). But more important than that is to choose ONE standard. Sure, you may say being different allows you to pull up to that empty pump, but what's more likely is that you would be headed "the wrong way" to everyone else who would use that pump. Think about it. Having said that, my Miata enjoys the best of both worlds. Having the it on top of the rear fender means I can refuel from either side. Also, the designer who came up with putting an arrow in the fuel gauge to indicate which side to refuel was brilliant. Even with my own cars, I sometimes have to stop and think. Kudos to Ford, I think they were the first.

Passenger side, because when it's on the driver side, you have to pull in close enough for the pump to reach, but then when you open your door, you may not have much space. When it's on the passenger side, you can pull in as close as you want to the pump, and the driver's door is on the other side, so you have room to open your door wide.

If you have trouble getting your car the right amount of space from the pump when it's on the passenger side... you need to learn your corners. Those are the people who refuse to make right turns, in fear of the curb, even though they are 3 feet from it.Other that that... I could care less. All my dubs have had the filler on the passenger side, and it's habit now. What I think would be better than a "Standard", would be a standard of putting the location of the filler on the gauge cluster (like some mfgrs do). Especially rentals...

LOL, not here. I'll pull into a station, and all the pumps will be filled by driver's side cars. So there is no easy way to wait. What ever happened to in the center? Like on my old Mustang?

I heard the main reason behind having it on the passenger side is this: when you run out of gas on the highway, you are not exposed to traffic as you refuel, because you stand on the shoulder side of the car.

And of course, the passenger side changes if you're in Japan, Australia, and England... So then manufacturers would have to swap a lot of plumbing in those areas. My Jag has fillers on top of each rear fender. Not a problem. Many of my domestic cars have had the filler under the rear license plate so it doesn't matter which side you pull in...

Our Sube has the same thing. It's very helpful when you wind up swapping cars often. Then again, since you have to refuel the A8 so often, how could you forget? I also vote for the passenger side, so I can skip the long lines at NJ Thruway rest areas to refuel. Tom

I've always thought that was a cool idea. Flip the plate down and voila. Very stealth.

I like them on the drivers side because I hate having to walk around my Volvo to fill up. It's like a freaking aircraft carrier and takes a while to get around the other side. On the other hand I like them on the passenger side so I don't whack my door on the pump or uprights. So basically... I wish they were still in the center under the licence plate like my 73 Buick.

I think it's nice having the fuel door on the passanger side. I think it has to do something with european style of their cars. And it different, take a look at all the asian cars (hondas, toyotas...etc) they all have them on the driver side.

I prefer the driver side. Get out, slide the credit card, insert nozzle, start the pump and get back in the car. The metal poles don't bother me, just park so your filler door is right accross from or slightly past the pump this way the poles do not get in a way.Another thing, I never shut down the engine at a gas station, anyone does the same?

But you can't use just one or the other. They go to separate tanks that don't cross fill (unless the return switch went bad and pumped the fuel returning from the front of the car back to the wrong tank...).

Now THAT is wierd, you have to fill up each tank separately. At least the fillers are on top where the hose can still reach the far one.

So many replies yet no one knows why doors are where they are.In countries where we drive on the left, the door should be on the right side (vice versa applies). Notice how on Japanese cars they on on the right? Reason being? Safety. If you ever run out of fuel on the road and need to fill up, your arse won't be sticking out in traffic holding a containner full of explosive liquid.
