I like a lot this 5-door sedan with hatchback-style trunk, I wish the Jetta and the Passat had this body style.

The problem with VW's "upmarket" move is that only the prices have moved upmarket

So, how much would a Skoda Octavia Laurin & Klement model cost in US dollars, at list price?

The article lists it as being "for the discerning businessperson who doesn't wish to spend a lot of money" but makes no mention of what that price would be. I realize there are probably local taxes and such that get involve with vehicle prices, making it hard to do a direct cost conversion, but a hint/ballpark figure would be nice.

I just went into the Skoda Germany car configurator. An Octavia L&K with this setup is €28,500 (keep in mind that includes a 16% tax)

While that may sound expensive as Euros are almost 1 to 1 in exchange, figure this car has HIDs, park sensor, climatronic, leather/alcantara, in dash nav, etc. It's outfitted better than a US GLX on equipment levels.

Its great to hear about the Skoda Octavia - a great car and my personal favourite.

In my home country - India, the Octavia is currently offered in two versions - Ambiente and Elegance. There are two engine options - the 115bhp 2.0 and the 90bhp 1.9TDI. But the best part is that they are both priced the same - approx. US$ 22.880,- OTR for the Ambiente and US$ 26.600,- OTR for the Elegance.

The Laurin & Klement is expected any time now - with the 110bhp 1.9TDI only - but is likely to be considerably more expensive (expected at US$ 31.600,- OTR).

Two interesting facts about Skoda India are worth mentioning here.
As of now, the Octavia is the only Skoda product to be sold in India. Yet, the Octavia manages to outsell all of its competitor cars combined (consisting of the Hyundai Sonata, Ford Mondeo, Opel Vectra, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry).
Secondly, Skoda is committed to a "same price gas or diesel" policy - the upcoming Skoda Superb will also have two engine options - the 193bhp 2.8V6 and the 155bhp 2.5V6 TDI - again identically priced.

Cheers,
TD60.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. Was the Skoda earlier to market or something? I wonder how it has such a large piece of the market.

No - Skoda was not earlier to the market. Hyundai, Ford and Honda were all there before. Toyota and Opel came in later, in that order. Please note that I call these cars competitors to the Skoda because the Indian automotive market classifies them all as D-segment cars - even though they are not necessarily priced in the same bracket. The Hyundai is priced almost on par with the Octavia. The Mondeo, Vectra and Accord are more expensive, whilst the Camry is much more expensive. However, the Octavia also manages to outsell some cars that cost much lower - notably the Suzuki Baleno, the Opel Astra and the Mitsubishi Lancer.

And even so, the Octavia sells approx. 600-700 units a month - the gas diesel split being 30/70 to 40/60.
