 RSA Type-S engine + 16,000RPM = uh oh (*large pics*)« »

Not sure why the necessity to downshift when already at 7,000RPM... maybe he wanted to upshift to 6th gear instead.
Quote »
never seen a nearly stock engine blown this bad

A couple of weeks ago, I was cruisin with my friend on a Sunday in his RSX-S. His only mods are: intake, exhaust, and a Hondata Flash. Well, he decides to drop the hammer and show me what his car has. He started redlining every gear. He was at about 7k RPMs in 5th, and for whatever reason, he decides to downshift into 4th. The gear box on a RSX-S is real close together and it's a 6 speed. So, instead of shifting to 4th, he accidentally shifted into 2nd gear right around 7k RPMs. All of a sudden, we hear a "boom" and it started to stink real bad. Right after that, we heard the chunks of the block falling out from underneith the car and hitting the chassis. The smoke got so bad we couldn't see infront of us, so he slammed on the brakes and pulled to the shoulder. We jump out of the car to realize his motor was on fire. Needless to say, we put the fire out before the fire truck came, and got a friend to pull us back home.

Apparently these are pistons...

Why does the gate let you throw it into 2nd at that speed? My truck wouldn't even let me throw it in 2nd if I was going around 60mph (like 3500rpm in 5th)...the only way I can throw it into a lower gear at high speed is double clutching, but that's like from 5th to 3rd

I know what that feels like. My engine blew up to, it wasn't my fault though it had nothing to do with shifting it or anything. I was driving on the highway in 5th and all the sudden I hear this explosion come from the front of my car then I see my oil light come on and my car died so I went and pulled over. What happened was one of my connecting rods broke near where it connected to the pistion and then the rest of the rod whipped around and smashed a hole in my block, it was bad times...

That coin is a quarter.

But I smell an Integra Type-R engine swap in that guys future.

Happened to me in my VR6, just driving along down shifting to pass someone and accidentally threw it into 2nd. I thought it should be covered under warranty but the stealership told me I was racing the car . It amazed me how they figured they could tell me what happened to the car. Eitherway, it happens he wont be able to get it covered under warranty unless he gets the ECU re-flashed or swapped out...

Rev limiters only help to cut the fuel if you overrev in acceleration or neutral or something, but if you drop down too far gear-wise it's all mechanical, nothing to cut off

It can't; the engine was physically overrevved by gearing multiplication and road speed. Nothing the engine management can do about that, really.

yup, on some rally cars, the engine wont do it because the tires just break loose, but its quite difficult on pavement.

I almost did it on my VR6 one time, I was going like 70, and went into second. Luckily the VR6 is geared pretty high, and the engine was just a tad into the red, just about right where the fuel cutoff is. The car was fine though it scared me.

The RSX shifter is suprisingly easy to do that too also. when I drove my bro's RSX-S, I accidently did it a few times, but it was at low speeds.

A number of people have killed their S2000s this way. It's actually
suprisingly easy to slip into the wrong gear in the sense that these
shifters will 'let you.' I'm very careful to take the time to shift
properly--I think a lot of people race through the box faster than
they are able--and they pay for it. On the new Celica's they have
actually designed a 'lock out' feature that prevents you from killing
the tranny by making it impossible to drop into second from 5th.

When I taught my girlfriend to drive my car, the first thing I taught
her was to slam the clutch in if she started a mis-shift. Saved the
car once.

And this one time... at band camp... I raced a Lamborghini on my bicycle... and then... like... I took a flute... and shoved it in my MAF. I won, BTW. The 1.8T can nevar loose!

Being an engi-nerd, it took me about 3 seconds to plug the numbers into my handy-dandy gearing calculator to see that in an RSX, 7k in 5th gear is a pretty impressive 130 mph... especially for a 25 mph zone.

You'd have to be, 1) lying, or...

Yeah... that's probably it.
