you can drop the pan and change the fluid and filter for service, i just did one for a guy last week, but if your experiencing trouble with the way the trans operates you probably need a new one. ...
just look to see if it has a dip stick or not. one style does one don't. the one without takes the expensive fluid.
parts deparment at your local dealership should be a big help also.

you will probably start off doing lots of oil changes, you won't need too many tools for this.
make sure you have the basics, and once your working keep a list of the crap you have to borrow...
i have one too. last time i needed it, it was at work and i was at home so i just used a flat head screw driver and an adjustable wrench. worked fine.
