Thread: Best Digital Camera?

1. 10-12-2001 01:20 AM #1
Keeping the price around 1k or less, anyone have a recommendation for a very good digital camera?
Been looking at Olympus 4040 and Sony...
Any suggestions / experiences would be most welcome!

We looked into the Olympus 4040 recently but decided to go with the Canon Powershot G2. It's 4 megapixel, but what really sold us on it was that the display was better than the Olympus, longer battery life, we like compact flash cards for memory, and price.
We bought our G2 about 3 wks ago for $800 online (no tax, free 2 day delivery). Noone had them in stock at the stores, but the price if they had them was $899 plus tax. In the meantime, the price has dropped by almost $150, which we'll get back because we used our Amex. We haven't had much of a chance to work with it yet, but I'll be going out to the mountains this weekend to take some pics. So far I've been impressed by it, just shooting pictures of my cat around the house to learn the different features.
Definitely check out http://www.dpreview.com.

sony 707v
canon g2
nikon coolpix 995

take your pic. g2 best optics, 707v best gizmos, 995 has nikon's slr experience behind it.
995: ~$800
707: ~$900-1000
g2: ~$700-800

I used to think it was the Nikon Coolpix 995 because of Nikon's legendary lens quality (which really is the most important aspect of a camera). Now, however, Sony's come out with the DSC-F707 which is a nice 5 megapixel camera for $1000.00. Plus it's got a Carl Zeiss lens, which is quite nice.

I need to start checking dates. I was wondering why people were recommending 4 megapixel cameras when he said under $1k

I'd reccomend anything BUT Sony due to Memory stick usage.

My personal preference is with Canon's.

Ditto... I owned a 995 *a long* time ago and was about to really question that recommendation...

LOL. You could probably find any of those recommended cameras for around $50. The G2 was an excellent camera for its time.
