Thread: Mod'ing your MK4 online... AutoModder.com

1. 08-16-2007 12:03 PM #1
My name is Harry Scanlan. I am a Graduate of Computer Programming / Analysis program at Conestoga College. I currently attend the University of Guelph completing my degree in Computer Science.
I am also a car enthusiast and have spent countless hours working on my car.
One of the main tools I use to modify my car is my computer. I, like many others, digitally modify my car in order to see what it may look like with different modifications. This has saved me countless hours and dollars and still gave me a generic idea of what my car could look like with different modifications, without leaving my computer chair.
My goal with this new site is to offer a FREE alternative to other mod sites, keep it easy for users to use and for everyone to enjoy it.
Understand that this site is an alternative to sites that already exist out there, not competition. It's new, and still in the process of being tweaked, thus current "Modifications" are limited, however expanding daily. My goal is not only to encorporate VW's, but all types of cars into the same software. The reason I started with VW is because i'm a VW Enthusiast myself.
Without further adue..

I was totally working on something like this in Flex 2.0 (AS3 & Flash).
I was going to use an open XML format and allow people to upload parts. Let me know if you want any help with it.

This was a great idea. Props

Actually, with the way I designed this application, I can add any type of vehicle to the program. Granted, a BMX or Motorcycle would have considerable less options than a car, it's definitely doable!
Stay in tune, the site will be getting more cars and more options shortly! Like I was saying, this is sort of a Beta test to put it through its paces. There are a few flaws (loading times VS Processing time) that need to be addressed. Right now, I'm looking for feedback to see how far we can take this!

The great thing about the image algo i've used, is that this is completely possible and definitely going to be availble shortly. "Front End" swaps seem to be of high priority. Thanks for the suggestions, and I'll be moving it up my "to-do" list.
Thanks for all of the comments guys!
In the second version, I'm working to have the ability to "save" the pictures of the vehicles you create, instead of everyone "Screenshotting" them, you will beable to click "save" and either download the picture to your system, or save it on my server!

Needs more stuff added!!
I couldn't even do anything with the Jetta except change the color and and some textured rub strips.
Good work though!

Sorry, I should have noted that this site was developed with the Mk4 Golf / GTi vehicle, and currently has the most modifications avalible. Please check back daily for updates and new vehicles!

Interesting, but black cars dont work. They turn a solid black. I'm usuming you're just changing a solid under color while the shadows/highlights remain constant for all the colors.

15. 08-16-2007 12:40 PM #13
This is true. Black is a problem so far

It's a great start!
I got pretty close to the real deal:

One thing that is good - notch filled bumper when aftermarket grills are picked (see my modded gti).
Can't wait till you get more options!

Really? I just tried it and it's still got a white filler or gap.

You may have to refresh, or open a new browser to clear the cache!
