I've been curious about the different instrument clusters that VAG sends to various segments of its market. This question has also taken on a new degree of interest once we learned that some of the European, Canadian, and a few US-spect MkVIs have the 'H' cluster that supports Dial Staging (sweeping dials at startup). We know that 'H' clusters support this function, but I'd like to know a) do any other modules support staging, and b) are these unit making their way into or out of the US market?
I'd like to start a listing here for those that have ready access to VCDS, whether or not you are interested in staging dials, of what instrument cluster coding you have. Also, if you tried to activate instrument staging. Let's see if any patterns emerge.
Using VCVDS 912 Beta, select Module 17 - Instruments (J285)
Then read the part number for your cluster (top left dialog box).

      I'll start things off:
      US-spec vehicle
      2010 GTi 2DR, 6MT
      Build: 07/2009
      VCDS 912.0 beta
      Instrument cluster #: 5K6 920 970 G
      Coding: 270D00
      Activate Staging: Fail

Could you also state when your car was build. That might have something whether it is fitted with the G or H instrument cluster.

Hmmm ... I wonder if the H will make it into the TDI too, or if it's different for other reasons. Obviously the faces are difference ... but the electronics could be the same.

      I noticed if you replace the 5K6 920 970 G # with 5K0 920 970 G that is the part number for the clusters.
Might want to check if those who cant enable the sweep have outdated (older production) clusters.
http://www.magauto.com is a good source to check if part numbers are valid or discontinued... Just a hunch

Jettas and Golf wagons are built in Mexico, the rest are made in Wolfsburg. It is no surprise that they will lag in getting the newest revisions of stuff.

Looks like this isn't a simple coding issue. Some of the clusters that have active staging seem to have the same coding as those that don't.

Found this video on Youtube of a Golf 6 staging and one commenter states the following..
"DarkMuhahaha: If your car was manufactured after the 45th week this year, this is changeable via a coding device. "

Wonder if this is something valid?

Proabably correct as it appears all GTI's built 12/09 and after can enable this change.
Mine was built 12/09 - just need VAGCOM to verify - any takers?
