      Mk3 Golf gti 16v

I thought I’d create a new project thread, since the old one seems to have disappeared with the change over of Vortex’s severs and I plan on doing a bit of work to the car in the next week before going to inters. I bought the car back in Nov 08, after passing my Driving test. It’s a 2.0L 16v abf. I had a 1.4 mk3 golf while I was learning to drive, but as soon as I passed the test I wanted more power.

This is what the car looked like when I bought it.

The first thing I did was get an original spoiler, it was faded and gray when I got it, so I sprayed it satin black.

Next I had mk4 style headlights, clear indicators and fogs, m3 style rear lights and a 12” mutant sub and amp which I had removed from my first car before selling it. So I installed them along with a badgeless grill.

I then bought some badges, a chrome vw rear badge because the original one was missing. I also bought a GTI front badge for the grill. I later removed the GTI badge because I didn’t like it.

      Pvw sticker

I got rid of the duck bill splitter and replaced it with a vr6 lip.

Next I ordered Weitec hicon gtx fully adjustable coilovers. While I was waiting for the coils to arrive, I installed bonnet lifters that I had lying around from my old car.

After a while of saving for new wheels, I got a set of 16” BBS Rs from Ebay.de. They are 8.5” up front and 9” on the rear.

I had to get them redrilled to 5x100 and custom hub-centric rings made up for them.

Progress on the car slowed rapidly after the new wheels as I lost my job and had to ration my funds just to keep the car. I did manage to make some small and cheap changes to the car in that time. Which included german font licence plates and some stickers.

While I was unemployed I spent some time helping my brother on his mk3 polo project, which was his replacement car while his corrado was getting a mk4 20v conversion.

      The polo went from this

      To this

I recently got 20mm h&r spacers for the rear wheels of the golf.

Next I got some lamin-x and smoked the indicators and frenched the fogs. I didn't like the way the aftermarket indicators and original fogs fit together, so I bought a set of original indicators and tow blanks and smoked them they fitted much better.

Here are some of my favourite pics of the car through it's different stages

Nice car man! You should crank down those coils.. At least do it and then take a picture of it. You don't have to tell anyone if you raise it back up.

I'm very jealous of your interior.

Cheers for the comments, I'm getting the arches rolled this week and plan to bring it down probably about an inch. I can't go too low because there are way to many monster speed bumps in my area and it's my daily. I'll throw up pics of the grill tomorrow when I finnish painting it.

      true, true, it's just semantics.

As for the OP, I was just looking again at the pics, I thought you couldn't "buy" those PVW stickers, I thought you only got them if you were in the mag?

Nice ride. Good job!! I'm wondering, how did you attach the spoiler to the car and what brand of satin black paint did you use? Did you prime the spoiler before you painted it? Thanks.

Weitec XS coils are great. And I'm sure that they ride beautifully at that height. Car would look a lot better lowered but I can sympathize with the speed bump situation

I rang the office of the company that suplies the subscriptions and said I had a subscription to Pvw and asked if I could have one. Just chancing my arm but it worked

3 bolts through the rear window, the holes for them were there when I bought the car. I used Halfords satin black. Yeah I gave it a few coats of halfords grey plastic primer before spraying it black.

I can't fault them too much really, I need to stiffen up the rear dampers, its too bouncy atm. Other than that they are perfect, but i don't have much to go on as they are the first coilovers I've had.

As said above the rears need to be stiffened, My rear tyres are getting eaten to bits. The arches are getting rolled this thursday and then I'll lower it more. I'm heading to England on friday morning for internation gti 2010.

      Damage to tyres

      Cause of damage, the arch

      Cheers, for all the comments

engine shot as asked for by eiriksmil

That's a strange throttle body... and the guide for the plug wires is a lot different than the NA one. Cool. Thx. (now clean it up to match the outside)

After a year and a half I finally sprayed the grill. I colour coded the bottom bit and sprayed the slats satin black.

      after a quick sand

      Primed

satin black, I tried to get the best textured look I could by spraying in short bursts and about a foot away.

      satin and primer

      colour coded

I then wet sanded the colour coded bit with 1200 grit paper and gave it 2 heavy coats of clear

It's not a professional job but it's 100 times better than fading black plastic.

Done a few bits to it today, nothing major. I put the old wheels back on because of the nct ( tyres shredded from rubbin) and because the salt made **** of the lips again, so it's time to take them apart, polish the lips and new bolts. I put the original gti rear lights back on and some surgery on the vr6 lip.

Anyway here are some pics, the car is manky, needs a good ould wash tomorrow.

Snow, ice, freezing temps and speedbumps = bolloxed vr6 lip.

The snow also ruined some of my stickers

All stiched up untill I get a replacement

      Rear lights and wheels on
