One of the problems with the FAQ on front brakes, is there is no pictures. You can describe something all you want, but pictures speak tons.

I had these parts laying around, so I thought I would put a little picture show together.

This first picture shows why you can't most VW carriers, except the Scirocco type carrier on a Fox strut. The spacing for the carrier holes are too far apart.

Using a Fox strut and one 16v Jetta rotor I had laying around to do the mock up.

This picture shows a 16v Scirocco carrier mounted to the Fox strut with a Jetta 16V rotor.

The second picture is an end view of the same carrier and rotor.

The next pictures are with the Jetta 16v caliper bolted up to the Scirocco 16v carrier with a Jetta 16v rotor on a Fox strut.

You can tell this is a Jetta 16v caliper, because of the little hard brake line that loops around, before going to the brake line. This is the only difference between a Scirocco 16v caliper and Jetta 16v caliper. You can remove the hard brake line and just use the standard Fox brake line, if you use the Jetta 16v caliper.

Next 2 pictures show a Scirocco 16v caliper bolted up to a Fox strut with a Jetta 16v rotor.

The next 2 pictures show a Audi 4KQ front caliper bolted up to a Fox strut with a Jetta 16v rotor.

See any difference in these calipers and carriers. Nope all the same.

Jetta 16v rotor part # 321-615-301D. This rotor can be found on some of these cars.

      Obviously, 84-89 Scirocco 16V
      95-99 Rabbit/Golf Cabby
      93-96 Golf
      89-99 Jetta
      90-97 Passat
      85-88 Quantum Syncro

16V Scirocco front brake carrier, part# 853-615-215. This can also be found on these cars.

      85-88 Quantum Syncro
      85-87 4000
      84-87 4000Q
      85-87 Coupe GT

      16v Scirocco calipers. Girling G54s. 1984-1989
      Left front part# 357-615-123A
      Right front part# 357-615-124A
These can be found on some of these cars.

      85-88 Quantum Syncro
      85-87 4000
      84-87 4000Q
      85-87 Coupe GT
      95-96 Rabbit/Golf Cabby
      89-92 Jetta
      90-97 Passat

Now if you can't find all this stuff in the junk yards, you aren't trying hard enough.

This will be a nice addition to the FAQ's. I have a set of calipers/carriers from a Coupe GT, but I don't know what year it was. Hopefully I got the right stuff. Thanks for posting a meaningful thread.

Nice thread and explanatory pics !!! I agree, you can never have to many pics when you're doing something you're unfamiliar with and the explanations help so much more !!!!

Those calipers are the same as Mk3 2.0 calipers, right? Aren't the 16v brakes the same as the Mk3 2.0?

The part numbers listed above show the cross referenced car on the VW parts manual. They may be the same, I don't know. Get a set and find out. Take some pictures and add it to this thread.
