Am I being stupid for putting $5k+ in a 13 year old vehicle with almost 170k on it? I have owned it for 9 years and haven’t had any problems with it. I drive less than 10k a year and spending $40k on a new one does not seem worth it.

So you like the vehicle, it has not left you stranded, it is paid off (I am assuming), and you do not have a desire to spend the money to buy a new one?
Of course you should spend a little money to make it feel new to you. Just make sure some of that money is used on preventative maintenance to help ensure that it keeps giving you no issues.

Agreed. Hell, if you're going to pull it apart for paint, may as well take stock of any items that may be worn and get it all taken care of then be happy to roll on for another 170k.
You mess with Gritty, you mess with the whole city.

      I'm watching you, Erik.

Does anyone have a brand loyal garage?

In the never-ending search for a new rig for the missus, I'm trying to steer her away from the Explorer. We have an Expedition. I want a Focus ST for a commuter. I cannot have an all-Ford garage. She really likes the Atlas, and I've seen the new GLIs (in black) and I like it, so that could be an option.

There is a significantly high number of brand loyal folks in my neighborhood.

Toyota, Subaru, Honda/Acura, and Hyundai owners. Heck, there are even people that have the 2 of the same damn car, just in different color

Toyota Tundra/Tacoma, and then the Mrs has a Camry or Rav4

      Subaru Forester and Outback

      Honda CRV and Accord

      Honda Ridgeline and Acura RL

      2 RDXs

      Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe

My dad is getting close, as he recently got rid of his BMW for a Cadillac CTS wagon (and my mom drive a Cadillac SRX), but he still has a Mercedes 560SL in the garage, and a BMW motorcycle...

my neighbor is Kia; Sportage and Spectra. Other neighbors are all over the map. I drive through a few Redmond neighborhoods that aren't brand loyal, but they are luxury loyal. SUV options from MB and Audi? Check. Lexus and Audi? Check. Oh look, there's the Range Rover family.

Agreed. Go through the steering, suspension bushings and mounts, hoses, belts, cooling system, just give it a good going over, and as long as it keeps running that well and compression looks good, run it another 150K or so.

I don't know why that would be a problem. If two vehicles from the same manufacturer both seem to suit your needs or wants, I don't understand why it might be an issue. Is it because they both happen to be Fords?

Thanks for the feedback and advice in the maintenance. I had the transmission, brakes, fuel system, AC serviced in the last year and the front end looked at a couple of years ago. As far as other maintenance, planning get the water pump, radiator and hoses replaced this Summer. Wife and I are planning on driving up to Yellowstone Park in September. I will probably replace the bushings and mounts as well.

I talked to my wife about my plans and she is going to get me the rims for my Birthday. I also get a bonus in July that I plan on using to upgrade the head unit and speakers.

I will probably paint it and replace the molding early next year, after we pay the Wife’s car off. Then hopefully it’s good for another 5-6 years; pay the house off and dump the gti for a 911.

I’d say keep it, it’s nice to not have car payments if you are still happy with a vehicle.
