i have a really, REALLY hard time believing this. keeping the 2.5 (which i am admittedly a fan of for maint reasons) was doable for the mkVI, back when it only got 3-4 mpg less than the competition....but now that you have non hybrid honda civics running around with 39-41 mpg on the highway, VW is gonna have to raise the mpg.
both the mazda 3 and ford focus hatches get like 37 mpg highway with their n/a 2.0's. i'm not saying i want 40mpg out of a non tdi golf, but it would be nice if i could have better than the class average hp and torque and something like 26/35 city/hwy. though i think they can do better.

After seeing the overhead view of the interior I am now much less impressed with the car. I do not car for the angled area of the dash where the radio, ac etc are. I also am not impressed with the relocation of the power window buttons. I much prefer the interior of the MkVI.
This along with the questionable front end, the terrible rear end AND the probability that we will not be getting a German built version of this car, is making it very likely that my MKVI will be the last new VW Golf I own.
I am now VERY happy I bought my MkVI.
There’s more to it than that, though. I feel the fast Golf is a part of me. We’ve grown up together. When it came along, all simple and full of fun, I was living in a flat in London. Now it’s soft and luxurious and I’m slouched in a house in the Cotswolds. It’s like 1970s rock music. New stuff comes along which I’m sure is cleaner and better produced but it doesn’t have the heart and soul of the original.
Real life photos are looking good with wheels that are properly sized to this class of compact car. I am starting to like the design, somewhat. However I am not a big fan of the grown-up interior, but it may look better in person with recarros (forgive my spelling).
