      1990 16VG60 Corrado on MS2 - Turbo diesel Grand Cherokee - SR5 4Runner
      10-30-2012 09:25 PM #1
Here we go again. Another "build" thread. I really don't know why I still have this thing. I guess it's been such a pain I want to run it into the ground or just strip it bare and race the poop out of it. I've had it since 2001 and really only drove it for 2 years. It's been an 8VG60 with SNS, then melted pistons so did MS2 and I'm now going to 16VG60 with MS2extra (wasted spark feature). This thread will be for the noteworthy items of this car. The engine build is done, the wiring harness is in and hopefully I didn't jinx myself by posting this before it starts up.

If it doesn't run well I'm just giving up and buying a F355!

Back in the day with TE-37's (2002):

      Plan for Stage 1:
      Engine
      Block: 9A
      Pistons: JE 9.5:1, 83mm
      Intermediate Shaft: Shaved/balanced
      Head: stock 9A 16v
      Intake manifold: Scirocco
      Throttle body: Automatic G60
      Exhaust: All stock

      Drivetrain
      Transmission: 02J hybrid - taller ring/pinion & 5th gear (R&P was 4.235, now -> 3.667) (5th was .837 -> now .717)
      Differential: Peloquin LSD
      Flywheel: Lightened stock G60 ~ 12lb.
Clutch: Clutchnet Sport with VR6 pressure plate
Shifter: 2001+ O2J shift tower/cables/shifter and Polo shifter box.

      Management:
MS2 Extra with wasted spark (Ford coil)
      Injectors: 36 lb Accel
Spark plugs: NGK BKR6EGP is the best so far for NA mode
      TPS: Auto G60
      Crank sensor: 36-1 wheel

Plan for Stage 2 in early 2014:
Engine has to be rebuilt due to dead valve stem seals
Exhaust: Raceland header, free flow cat, Autotech cat back
Engine: New JE rings, ARP rod bolts
Head: port & polish head, new valve guides & seals, 3 angle valve job. Dual exhaust cams.
Intake: throttle body and manifold ported and gasket matched

Plan for Stage 3 in late 2014:
      Install the following:
Supercharger: G60 rebuilt and RSR ported by BBM
      Intercooler: 4" PWR A/W IC
Heat exchanger: small car radiator and all lines 3/4" with straight barbed fittings, no elbows
      Water pump: Jabsco Centripuppy
      Pulley size: 68mm
Bov / dv: stock G60 bypass

I wanted a Corrado since the first time I saw one in 1996. I was pumped to get one in '01 and made plans to sell my Miata immediately.

In the first year of ownership the crank bolt snapped twice. I also got stranded once in Boston because I put the radius lug bolts on conical wheels. One wheel didn't hold and fell off. Fortunately I was coming to a stop. I was young and dumb.

4th gear broke once. When I fixed the tranny I also put a taller 5th gear in. At 120 MPH in 5th gear, the extra load caused the engine to run lean and melt pistons. I don't think SNS was at fault here. I should have paid attention to AFR.

It saw a lot of downtime and tow trucks This wasn't a headache that I needed as a full time college student and single father of 2 small children.

As it sat in my father's garage from 2004 - 2008:

Yaay, 2009, finally running again. I used a couple pistons that a friend had around. This time the ECU is MS2 with 36-1 crank input and direct coil output.

Well this ran for a few months before the crank bolt snapped again.

Good to see another Maine Corrado
If it makes you feel any better I've had mine for 4 months and only driven it 4 times, each time something broke on it.

      BUT the wing still works

OP, nice thread and very nice engine choice (16VG60) IMHO
      Looking forward for more

Props for being a responsible father, that's no easy feat I'm surprised you didn't throw in the towel after all that, the force is strong with this one

Hey thanks guys. It feels good to get support in this venture. More than anything I'm just stubborn. Can't remember giving up on much. Ha, mostly girlfriends.

In 2008 I picked up a long block from JohnBarleyCorn down in the cape. He said it had new cams but he just covered them up in engine lube so I didn't notice they were used. If that's the only issue then I'll be happy because it was a helluva deal and included free delivery. I paid $600 for an assembled 9A bored out to 83.5mm and 9.5:1 JE pistons. Apparently it's only seen light use....

I just had the intermediate shaft balanced and then started gathering parts for the build.

So in 2008 I also needed some motivation to jump start this project. I did like we all do. I bought a set of BBS wheels I didn't need. Problem was they were the wrong bolt pattern. I re-drilled the fronts and used adapters in the rear.

In '09, since the engine was broken again, I decided to tow the Rado down to my girlfriend's place. She had an extra bay. It was great having my 4runner to tow with and carry things like the engine and the engine hoist, engine stand, parts, etc. I learned to appreciate the utility in SUV very much that year.

2010 - 2011: 2 years of putzing around. Wow, it takes me a long time to build and install an engine.

Buuuuttt, to make it easier, I decided to run NA first.

2011: Laptop stand and 02J full shebang setup (polo box + later shift tower). Oh, did i mention I also picked up a rebuilt 02J with a Peloquin LSD?

Yeah, I can't wait to see if this is the whole bit AND the reins.

Modern day, life priorities constantly getting in the way. Bought a new house and relocated the wife and the dogs. Being close to the ocean is nice. 4 beds, 3 baths, 2 offices, 2 living rooms, 2 dining rooms, 1 theater room, 9 ft insulated basement and 12 ft insulated garage. Yeah, hard work pays off. The lawn takes about 4 - 5 hours to mow though. Can't afford to pay someone to do it.

Love the story and history. Maybe we should start a new thread for ppl to post the life story of the corrado. Stick to it.

Ha, I've been dragging this horse around for so long the journey has overshadowed the actual build.

Huh, it has been a lot like horse ownership. I feed it money, trailer it around, waste tons of time hoping that someday it will be well behaved and worth something.

      Thanks! We love it!

Been doing work. Wiring is coming along. Input power & injectors are all set. Just 4 more sensors then it's about done. I promised the wife that I would have it started by Thanksgiving.

Yeah, I'm kinda worried about moisture. This is the primary switched 12 volts.

IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually got it to start with loose spark plugs. Oops. I got a little bit of noise in the rpm and map signals. I may have the cam timing off, it sounds kind of diesely. I'll have to check that. Well, there's no coolant in it so I'll have to finish assembling it then off to tuning.

hehe, the fawn colored one throws her front legs like a Boxer. She's very cat like, comes with the breed, which is Fila Brasiliero. Very athletic and protective. Nothing short of a 6 ft fence can keep her contained. We spend a lot of time disciplining and training her. Such a naughty one.

The smaller dog is a 70 lb Pit Bull. He's probably the most perfect boy dog ever. A big sweet heart.

The 36-1 tooth wheel is a piece I got from "corvrman" on ebay. Price was $25 but for an extra $7 he turned the I.D. in it to be similar to the pulley. Once received I had the O.D. turned on the pulley, then they were pressed together. Design spec. for an interference fit would be .002" on diameter but these just have .001" interference on diameter. So far so good at idle. Got a signal right away.
