Even down to that little caveat you list there at the end.

Last Christmas at 11:40 PM my phone rings. Everything is down. AC in server room failed. Erik is drunk. Giddy up!
The difference though is I then make a call and somebody else actually fixes the problem. But if it doesn't get fixed within the SLA framework, it's on me.
I don't need to leave my house. But I need to monitor it until it's done, then document the resolution.

The fixing it myself part sucks. Luckily 99.98% of what I do can be done remotely, so that's nice.

      1. I like that I am given a certain amount of time off and no one can bitch to me about it. There's no "well Joe took 1 week off and you took 4, Joe is awesome and you suck" it's "hey you said I could take 3 weeks so I took 3 weeks."

      2. I am generally not concerned with the "call me on PTO" because I rarely get the call, but there are times when it's just nope, not going to answer. Once was when I was in France, sorry, not looking at my phone. The other is when I took my kid to Disney. I already told the new job, I have 2 vacations planned next year, a week in June and a week in Feb, both times I will be available by phone/email EXCEPT the three days I'm taking the girls to Disney world. I don't mind interrupting sitting on the beach or by the pool because my kids can keep playing, I'm not making my kids sit around at Disney (when I'm paying $1500/day) because daddy needs to send an email or get on a phone call. New job was 100% cool with it. I accept that there's a paygrade at which you can't have that attitude any more, but I am not there yet. If I was I'd expect to be compensated for it.
      1. Nobody ever plays that game. It's not wise to do so.

      2. If I want to go away and either don't have cell coverage or don't want to be disturbed at all, I can arrange for that. We have a backup, and a backup to the backup for everything, every person, every process, every procedure. Nobody gets screwed over. Also, I've worked my share of weekends, late nights and holidays over the years but theses days, it's rare for an unplanned event that I get a call more than maybe once a yr.

We spent two years in St. Peters and then headed back to Roswell, GA (my 6th and 7th grade). I used to race RC cars in St. Charles, and played BattleTech in a gamestore along the river in Old Town St. Charles (the cobblestone street area). I still get on Google streetview once in a while to see how the area has changed (honestly not too much). I had a rough go of it in Missouri, the kids weren't very nice to me and I ended up getting kicked out of Catholic school. My parents still deeply regret enrolling me there. That was a tough time in my childhood.

Ah, OK. Random, infrequent updates about two addicts, I can see how they could be mixed up.

As far as I know, this kid is still in rehab.

He'll be back eventually, giving us another five chapters to read.

That's cool. The first exposure I had to the unlimited PTO system was when my BIL was a very junior lawyer at a medium sized law firm, and they absolutely played that game all the time. Glad to see not everyone is a petty douche.

We're stretched so thin in Current Job that most people are covering at least one additional role, there are no backups because no one has any time to cross train on anything else.

Granted, we aren't nearly as mission critical as you guys, but still, it's absurd.

I need to order festivus gifts BEFORE turkey day next year.
Every year I order the week after turkey day and things always get screwed up.
Emails a week or two later with "order refunded due to unknown reason", "order shipped to incorrect location, possibly will delay order" or other insane problems.

Previous employer had a documented PTO policy of 5 sick days and X weeks of vacation per year. Vacation had to be taken in full days and was use it or lose it and unused sick days were paid out on January 15 of the following year. It was a small company (<10 people) and it was up to all of us to coordinate and track time.

Owner-Bossman also had very strict unwritten rules about taking time off:

      - only one person out at a time
      - nobody could take off the 1st, 10th, 15th, 25th, or last day of the month
      - nobody could be out when he was out but he never shared his schedule
      - no more than 1 week at a time
      - all vacation time over 1 day had to be scheduled by the end of January.

One year owner-bossman decided to not pay out unused sick time and didn't tell anyone. When asked, he said that he simply changed his mind. So we all decided to ignore written and unwritten policy and and he never noticed.

Now that I'm self employed, I have a very lenient PTO policy - it's a nice day, I'm taking the afternoon off.

Man, it is too wet outside to be building an ark.

When this floods then the commute home is gonna suck.

Luckily the river at home isn't expected to hit flood stage until 10am tomorrow.

      1. Moves back home
      2. Gets job

I guess it’s a minimum of six. 2, 3, and 5 are often repeated. Extras are a bonus.

No, Mrs McMike is not involved in this one.

You need to set it up like a Choose Your Own Adventure.

"Go back to rehab, go to page 24. Start using, go to page 68."

      Flooding update:

Our parking lot floods. Because the cheap owner won't pay for drainage repair/mediation. We have a sump pump that pumps overflow into the street. Legal? Meh. The hose is missing today. So we have a giant lake. I've named it Dick Lake, after the company namesake (he hates that name and makes sure people call him Rich).

Went a Deadmau5 show last night.

Easily the best EDM show I have been to. Great crowd, great music, great show, still trying to process it all.

Got home at 1:45am. Being at work at 8am sucked.

      My ears are still ringing.

Yikes dude. And to think my boss just yelled at me for not taking enough vacation time--"I gave you an extra week so you could USE it"

Why is this never a problem with highly successful companies? It's almost like someone who's capable of coming up with a vacation policy so asinine is also incapable of successfully running and managing a profitable business
