Does anyone know how to paint a W8 dome light console on here? I know it's been done before, but I lack the skill to avoid painting over the L.E.Ds and the backlit portions of the buttons.

      Times 2!!

Last I read in a thread the problem IIRC is the paint sticking to the plastic long term. Some peeps who did the "Joey" Mod if you will reported the paint peeling after like a year or so. It scared off peeps from just painting the console themselves.

Has anyone tried RIT dye? I use it on my RC parts all the time.

Interesting idea. Here's a DIY on dying plastic http://www.bmx-forum.com/t/183272/ho...arts-with-pics

Only concern with this method is how to keep the little marks in the console that illuminates from getting dyed too, also not to mention you will dissemble the console to keep the electronics from getting damaged.

An alternative is to just LEDs to your stock console. Been done before and not too hard to do.

My dilemma is that I want the back lit buttons, but I also want the W8 console to match the all-black R32 interior. I'm stubborn when it comes to doing modifications to my R.

Nope. The last one I saw sold new was my spare one below, and that was 4 years ago. Once in a awhile these comes up but you will pay a premium for them.

VW never made them in black. ECS and somewhere else only made a limited number of them.

they were produced by VW individual. TMTuning did a run of them years ago for a lot of us original owners.

there was also a run of them done by a guy that had them painted. but the ones from TMT were legitimate black w8 consoles.

My understanding was TMTuning bought a stock from the people painting them.
Many have pealed, and from all sources they were sold from.

I was part of the group buy on the batch from TMT and the info was that they were from VW individual. My original one in my old R32 never peeled and I have one in my current car that is also perfect.

They weren't, TMTuning told me themselves. They even told me their order from the AMERICAN maker was never 'fully' fulfilled and stopped selling them.

I love the story though. VW made a small 'special' run for a 'special' group. Sounds really likely. Doesn't matter much to me, I never had an interest.

People will still buy them, esp if they look good.

The spare one that I sold was from the 2nd batch of the TMTuning run. The one that I have installed in my car now was from a small co way back when. Been on the the car for 8+ years and no peeling.

To retrofit LEDs to your console you would have to:

      1. Source 2 pre-wired LEDs (they will have positive and negative wires)
      2. Buy 2 LED holders
      3. Locate where you want the LEDs and drill 2 holes in the console to accept the LED holders
      4. Install LED holders to the holes, and then install the LEDs
      5. Tap to wiring connected to the dimmer (so that the LEDs will work with the dimmer). If you go to ECS Tuning you can follow their wiring instructions for the normal installation of the non-Black W8 consoles as it shows you the wiring to tap.

If I didn't already have the black W8 console would have already retrofitted the LEDs. The only thing that I haven't done yet and been meaning to, is to add and LED to the console knob, should be a straight forward process too.
