Hi guys. So, I've had the car for a grand total of six days. Was just showing off what's under the hood to a coworker when I noticed droplets of pink and the coolant tank is almost at minimum. Leaking already?! Has anyone had this problem? Calling the dealer now...I'm gonna have Mark 4 flashbacks/PTSD if this is a preview of coming attractions.

Its not uncommon to have fluids that are not topped off from the factory. Bring it in to have the dealer check to make sure there are no leaks and top it off.

There are pink droplets below the tank, so I think it's already leaking. But I did see a thread on golfmk7 about an expansion cap replacement, so hopefully it's something simple.

      Hi all,

So I bought my GTI on 7/20 and it has 3800 miles now. Today I noticed the coolant level in the reservoir is slightly below "Min", when the engine's cold. If I remember correctly, it should be on the right level when the car was delivered in July. Is this normal? Anybody else has the same problem?

BTW, with no G13 available here, should I visit my dealer or just adding some purified water instead? Thanks a lot!

Could be a water pump failure.

Mine has been doing the same thing. I noticed it when I put the car away for winter. I have about 6,000 miles on it now. I plan on taking it to the dealer in spring and having it pressure tested. I haven't found any leaks, coolant droplets or even smelled coolant so I have no idea where it is going. Good luck.

What's the level at when running the engine at operating temperature ?

Reason I ask is that It's an expansion tank, not a reservoir so it's a bit redundant to focus on the fluid level as it's constantly fluctuating with the pressures throughout the temperature range. My VW's have always seemed to stay just under the fill mark, but it does fluctuate. If you don't see any leaks I wouldn't worry. It could be a simple case of an overlook on the PDI too, so I'd ask your dealer to look into it on your first service

About the first 1000 miles I had my car it went from the full line to halfway between max and min. Sometimes I'd smell coolant. From ~1000 miles to now (4400 miles) the coolant level hasn't moved, and I haven't smelled it.

I wouldn't worry to much, fluids expand/contract with changes in temperature. Which is why you have an expansion tank. Chances are it's cooler now than when you got your car, hence the coolant has contracted.

Thank you for all the input.

But someone above did remind me something~ I can smell coolant coming out from AC. It was pretty strong when I first switched to heat. The smell now is lighter but still noticeable. This is probably something I need to ask my dealer

My coolant level was below min and there was a humming noise coming from the car. I took it in to the dealer and turns out it was water pump failure. I would be curios to know why you think he should ignore my reply?

When were you hearing the humming noise? Our cars have an after-run coolant pump to keep the turbo and other components from roasting after a long run. Shuts off about 2 or 3 mins after the car turns off.

Are you sure you don't drive a MK6 GTI? I would seriously be amazed if VW has not managed to fix the water pump issue by now. We replace multiple water pumps weekly on MK6 GTIs and I doubt they want to continue paying for that through warranty.

I hear it during driving. It sounds like a fan is having a hard time turning.

Unfortunately it's a mk7. Bought it new in October. I was pretty disappointed to hear the water pump failure because just like you I thought vw would have fixed the issue in the new model.

I noticed my coolant was down to the bottom of the tank a couple weeks ago. added a glass of water to bring it to the right level. This after a year of ownership.

Not worried. Could have been at the min line, a little bit oozed out while the seals broke in, who knows. Unless you're topping it up once a month I really don't think it's a big deal.

Every single one of my VW's have done this, during the first cold weather season when I had bought them new. Just like others have said, it is an expansion tank. Coolant just like any fluid contracts when cold and expands when warm. Just adding a little distilled water or coolant will correct this.

Also OP G13 is the main use coolant now. G12 is hard to come by at this point.

No car should be consuming coolant. Normal? Seriously?

i noticed this in mine as well, only at about 1200 miles. i went and bought some g13 just in case, but haven't added any yet, because when i checked the levels after driving a bit, they were higher.

still concerning that it would be so low, though...

So this happened on the way home..

Popped the hood, level not lookin' so good...

Taking it in tomorrow.. hope it's not a failed water pump...

Sucks, first I have seen of this, guess its nothing common. Let us know what it is, a leak somewhere thats for sure.
Watch your temperature going to the dealer do not let the engine over heat, in worst case scenario you can add some water. I am assuming they will do a flush anyway when they fix the issue. Good luck.

Mine was slightly low a few months ago. Didn't get a warning or anything, just happened to notice it. Didn't think much of it, just topped it off. It's been fine ever since.
