The Corvette team has pretty much squeezed out all the performance/handling from the current configuration so the switch was inevitable if they wanted to keep upping the performance/handling capabilities.
Why you wouldn’t (buy an Optima SX):
Because you have your eyes on the Frigidaire Limited Edition Camry that you saw last weekend at the neighborhood Autoplex.
No, that bodywork covers a mid-engine layout. Now whether it's for a Corvette or not is questionable, as we've seen that repeatedly since the early '60s.
