      Hello friends,

I have just bought my self a project car.
And I ended up with an Golf Mk2 GTI 16V 1986 [pre 1988]. With 264.000km/165.000miles on the counter.

It is not in good condition, but to be a car, driven i Norway, it is actually not bad.
There is barley any rust or corrodation on the body. Only one small hole in the floor, and some rust on the doors, front fenders.

The car has been standing still more or less ouside for about 5 years. And has been sold 2 times with the plan of restoration.

When I got it, it was soaking wet inside, due to a leaking sunroof and bad door-/windowseals.
The original interior is therefore full of mildew. And I found a mice nest, so there is some droppings in there too.

Along with the car I got a new interior, new doors and a new hatch. Along with many other things.

The plan for this car, is to get it back to "stock", but lowered, and getting the "right look".

The car when I went to pic it up:

      The interior:

      Plans/parts:
      Respray in original color
      HEL injection lines
      HEL brake lines
Sunroof with tilt [From Audi type 81 B2/Passat Type 32/321 B2]
      H&R Monotube
      7x15" "BBS reps" (Summer)
      6x14" Snowflakes black/polished (Winter)
      Dynamat throughout the car
Custom stereo, but use the original placement of the speakers, and a hidden sub in the spare well.
      Contemporary license plates

      And then driving with pride.

In Norway there is a scheme for classic cars, older then 30 years. It will only cost $57 a year in road tax (compared too $430 for "regular cars"), and you can get a nice price on the insurance. If you are a member of a enthusiast club, you can get your vehicle insured for up too $35.500 for as little as $70 a year. My VW Touran costs me $700 a year in insurance.

So I will not get plates on my GTI until 2016. And the plan is to get it ready for the summer of 2016. I actually think I will make that goal. But I will not rush. So if it isn't ready, I won't beat me up for it.

After installing generator and battery, I got a blinky coolant gague. Jumped the coolant level sensor, the blinky light stopped. But came back after a few minutes.

Have now taken out the seats and carpets. So I'm on my way to do the repairs I need.

      Nice another 16v project!
      Gary,

If you can take it apart you can make it faster.

Is there any chance for getting an overhauling kit for the k-jet box?

      Need some help!
I have gotten a nice offer on a set of BBS RS copies. But they are 8x17 et27. Will they fit on my car with or without rolling the wheel arches? I would go for 195/40-17 or 185/40-17

Today I recieved my tires for my summer wheels. A set of 7x15" BBS-reps, with Kumho Ecsta SPT KU31 on them.

And yesterday I recieved my original 6x14" snowflake rims that I have too referbish and two of them need to be straighten.

The car will sit on the snowflakes during winter, so I have snowtires if I have too move or use the car. And they will be on the car if it is to be used in a movie or TV-show. I know of a guy that my family, friend, kollegs and my workplace has borrowed out cars too. He is hunting down cars for movie and TV-show producers. So they will match the correct time and era.

When it comes too the carpet cleaning, only the two front carpets was saved. The luggage room carpet was I unable too get clean. It smelled too much. But I can't understand that, because the carpet in the luggage room has never been wet. Everything else in the rear of the car is clean and does not smell.

I bought a new carpet from vw heritage, along with a door sill and timing belt, pulley, tensioner and waterpump. All theese items was cheaper from vw heritage than just buying a timing belt kit from a VW dealer or any after market shops in Norway. CRAZY!!

Nice going. Looks like a decent car for a project

I would say not to bother with the snowflakes, even more so if they are for winter driving. But to each his own of course.

      You coming to bugrun?

      Thanks.

I would love to have something close too original. And if the car is to be used in TV/movie from the 80/90's. The car is not to be used during the winter. But it is nice to have the opportunity too move it, if I have to.

I will not show up at bugrun, altleast not for a couple of years. Will focus on "local" VACN meets. And cars and coffee. And some track days.

But I will consider going some time in the future.

I have now picked up a sunroof with tilt function, from an Audi 80. This will bring a nice feature for warm and sunny days. Get "cool" air, without burning the forehead.

Is it any Audi 80? If not what years do I look for if I want to get the sunroof?

Most of them are from cars with white headlines. I need to get my sunroof dressed in black lining.

Has started on the floor. Have removed the sound deadening. First with hand tools. Has taken me over 10 hours on just one footwell. Tried the trick with dry ice today. Took me 1,5 hour, with much better results, to do the three others. Dry ice saved me about 30 hours

Great Project! I had a racing green 16v back in the 90's (with snowflakes) - and this certainly makes me want one again

I see the "backplate" (or what it's called) is from a facelift Golf - are you gonna change it back to the early version?

I did not know that. My plan wasn't to do that, but maybe I need to do that now. What is the difference?

Today I have finished the cleaning and grinding of rust. And primered the foot wells with a product called Brunox.

Will start grinding under the body, and prime it with Brunox and owatrol penetrating oil.

      The early mk2's had the VW logo to the left like this;

From 1988 it was like this

Then I can reassure you, the panel is correct. The badge is wrong. It is a faulty detail done by a previous owner. There are no holes behind the vw badge. I just need to get the right badges for my car.

My office for the day. Grinding away loose underbody protection and unveiling rust and corrosion. Will treat it with some owatrol oil and then some tectyl.
