I am thinking about installing one of these, either getting one from DriverWanted or Blitzen 155, but I can't find the proper wire connections that need to be made for the new W8 dome light to work. The "How-To" instructions are just for the Passat and I have heard that the wires have changed colors so that the instructions are useless since I do not know which wires to use to hook up the dome light part. Can someone who has a 2001 Jetta with a sunroof and the W8 dome light installed help me out the installation of this thing?

So the wires colors were the same? Also, did you have to cut your existing wiring harness?

Yes and yes
You do have to cut and pay close attention to which wires to hook up to

makes sure also these wires go into the right position
but other than that really quite easy

I'm not very experienced either
follow these steps.........
Step 3: Convert wiring and plug:
- Insert four of the cables (000 979 131) into positions 1, 3, 4, and 5 on the new plug (3B0 972 706)
- Attach a butt connector to the end of each cable (see figure 3)
- Remove old connector from dome light wiring harness
- Attach the RED/BLACK (2001.5+) or the RED/BLUE (2001.5-) wire to the butt connector for position 5
- Attach the BROWN wire to the butt connector for position 4
- Attach the BROWN/WHITE wire to the butt connector for position 3
- Attach the length of wire, from the parts list above, to the butt connector for position 1
- Positions 2 and 6 remain empty

How hard was it to pull off your A-pillar cover? I have heard that it is very tough to pull off. Thanks for all you help.

Is this a pic without cutting the existing wiring harness? If so, that is what I would really like to do just because it is always reversible. Also, do you have the instructions for it?

I need more info on this too. Ive ordered three parts as listed in how to threads- the console, and two wiring harness type things. Do I need another long wire piece to wire it to the dimmer switch? Or does what Ive ordered include this?

Bump...again

15. 02-16-2003 04:01 PM #13
Just to get all the info in one spot, WITHOUT having to search through 10+ pages, here are the parts list.
W8 Interior light w/Sunroof
* 3B7 947 106 A 2EN : gray
* 3B7 947 106 A Y20 : beige
W8 Interior light w/o Sunroof
* 3B7 947 105 F 2EN : gray $44.00
* 3B7 947 105 F Y20 : beige
(1)3B0-972-706 Dome light plug $2.47
(2)000-979-131 Wires w/ connectors (for w8 dome light) $1.74
(2)000-979-103 wires w/ connectors (for existing wiring harness) $1.79
(1)893-971-993 Connector (mates with existing harness) $1.02
I HAVE THE SUNROOF, WHICH IS WHY I HAVE THE 6 PARTS LISTED ABOVE.
For the wires, you will want to cut them in half. You will use all four pieces of wire for 131, and three pieces for 103.
Insert the 4 wires (131) into harness (706) into positions 1,3,4, and 5. If you look on the harness, on one side it will be numbered.

Insert three wires (103) into harness (993). Now attach wire 3 from the harness (706, the larger one) to wire 1 of harness (993, the smaller one). Wire 4 of harness (706) connects to wire 3 of harness (993). Wire 5 of harness (706) connects to wire 2 of harness (706).
This is just a recap of what wires go where:
1. to the blue/gray wire at the dash light intensity rheostat
2. Not used.
3. to pin 1 on the plug that goes to the existing harness
4. to pin 3 on the plug that goes to the existing harness
5. to pin 2 on the plug that goes to the existing harness
6. Not used.

Last thing, connect a wire, about 18 awg, to wire 1 on harness 706. This wire will run down to the light switch. It will connect to the GRAY/BLUE wire.
Put everything back together, and you should be done. Trust me, everything is VERY easy once you get started. And another note, instead of leaving the wires the length that they were once they were cut in half, I made them about 2-3 inches each. That way, when they were put together, you have less wire to hide overhead.

----------------------
No you do not. Harness 706 plugs into the W8 switch, and 993 connets to the existing harness. No cutting.
Hope that helps out.
Mike

So how do I hook it up without cutting the existing harness?

Read above. The two new harness' are attached to each other with the new wires. You only cut the new wires that you bought. They plug into the new harness which plug into the factory and W8 harness. VERY VERY easy once you get started.

I have ordered:
W8 Interior light w/o Sunroof
* 1 x 3B7 947 105 F 2EN : grey £21.00
* 1 x 3B0 972 706 : plug 6-pin for light £1.50
* 2 x 000 979 131 : cables for plug 80p
You have two more parts. Discrepency here! What am I missing exactly, can I still do this? I was told this is all I need!
In summary I am short by
(1) 893-971-993 Connector and
(2) 000-979-103 wires.
I AM LOST!!!

I have the sunroof. If you were told that that's what you need, I would assume that person is correct.
Can somone verify that what parts are needed for a W8 switch WITHOUT a sunroof. The whole point of my post was to clear things up. I guess I didn't think about the people without sunroofs.

No, the wire to the dimmer switch is not included in what you buy. Just buy some 18 awg wire from your local auto parts store. 4 feet is MORE than enough.

Thank you, and I think I have caused confusion as I dont have a sunroof- apologies guys!
Ok I think I know what I am doing now

THat way if I ever get rid of the car or want to go back, I can without any hassel!

Buy these parts and you will not have to cut any original wires.

What is the piece in the upper left hand used for?

26. 02-17-2003 01:19 PM #24
Top right of my instruction pic...it attaches to the existing harness. The fatter plug end goes to the light itsef.

27. 02-17-2003 01:51 PM #25
