I don't have a NAV MIB2 but I do find it funny that you can update your NAV and even download firmware updates in Europe.

Yeah it is definitely class action territory. The VW website lists the cars for navigation updates, but then says “see dealer for update”. Some folks have been charged for the diagnostic fees just to have a dealer check only to find out there are no updates for their Discover MIB nav radios.

And yes, it is ridiculous that Europe has access to the free map and firmware update downloads direct to SD card!

I wish some clever person would figure out how to load OpenStreetMap files into this system. It's doable for Garmin devices...

I'd wonder what VW dealers would say if we were to request warranty radio replacement due to expired maps assuming that new radios would come with the most recent map updates. One could very easily make the argument that it is unsafe to have expired maps on the vehicle.

Yeah, but I purchased a car with a nice built in navigation that has a convenient heads up display in the MFD that I expected to have yearly map updates.

      Hi all,

Maybe few on here know me from this forum from MK6 days. At any rate I was first one in US to retrofit MIB2 into MK6.

There is a way to update USA maps of the units. Each MIB2 unit has a activation key pre-installed when the radio is installed, and appropriate version of maps activated for that key.
Both keys are kept, one on the Radio itself and matching key on the SD card maps.

The way to update the maps is to find the key of the originally loaded map with the car, and then copy that key onto the new SD card with new maps.

I have done this on all MIB2 units in the past and it took me 16 long months to figure out the complete retrofit with component protection removal.

But yes it is possible even though VW dealers will tell you otherwise.

The question is how do I find the existing key and how do I transfer it to a brand new “AS” map SD card

Where does one find this activation key on the sd card and where does it go on the new sd card?

Keys are both on the SD card and depending what version the radio was activated with the place of it changes and file name changes. It's tricky but once i have SD card in hand I can find it, it's easier done than explained as it was done this way so people don't play around with the file system on the SD cards.

Is there any difference for the Discover Pro which stores nav data on a SSD? I've been wondering if I can just purchase the latest SD card version and if my MIB2 would read that in as an update using a modified version of this procedure:

How did this go? So are there North American map updates available for 2016 MIB2 Discover Pro from Europe/ROW? I'd happily pay VW for an update, but they don't seem to have one officially available here in Canada - 3 years after I purchased the car.

There is a map update for 2018 map data for USA/Canada discover pro.
VW dealers most likely won't do the update for you as they are clueless, however they do sell the ad card.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll check at a local dealer to see what they can do. If they are as clueless as you and I suspect, would you be able to copy this key over if I were to buy the SD card - keeping in mind that my current maps are stored on built in SSD?

In order for me to update anything, I need both the original sd card and new sd card. Then I can copy necessary files over to the new card.

I have the Discover Pro which doesn't have SD card for maps - stored on built-in SSD. I guess the answer then is 'no' you won't be able to?

I was at my dealer yesterday and they pulled up 3G0 919 866 AH based on my VIN, my car came with the map SD card ending in AC (version 3). No idea what version map they ordered, will find out when it comes in. Parts guy mentioned they “need to enter a code” to get the new card to work. It would be nice though to find out how to transfer this key you mention to the new map SD card on my own. There is a post on the Jetta/GLI VI forum that has a lot of people trying to figure out this silly map update game for the Discover MIB II that Volkswagen has.

      I know.

But all discovery pro's came in with original sd card somewhere in the car. At least in Europe they did.
As card is only used to update the system files to ssd drive. Then it's only used to update at later date when new maps are available

I could not find 3G0 919 866 AH being sold on ebay so I could not find pics, but the copies of V1, V2, V3, V4, V5 and V6 do not end in AH part number that I’ve seen from ebay listings with photos.
If the mystery map card that ships to my dealer is older than my V3 then obviously I’ll get my money back, and then try to make them try V6, which they probably won’t because they are insistent on looking up parts by VIN.
