Thread: New Toyota Supra Caught Testing (Spy Photos), Joint-Development with BMW's Z5 Roadster

    1. 02-06-2018 06:38 PM #476
Supra details: three engines (EU-only 195hp 20i, 255hp 30i, and 335hp 40i - and this means the 380hp Z4 M40i will be offered only by BMW and only in North America and a few other non-EU markets).

Intro later this year, common sense suggests it will be simultaneous with Z4.

It will be Toyota in name and body design only - everything inside the car is the same familiar BMW stuff: same options, same colors, same interior materials.

Speaking of colors, it feels almost like a throwback to the 00s: Glacier Silver, Atacama Yellow, and Crimson Red are coming back, though there'll also be a new matte gray.

For the interior, you'll be able to choose between fabric, alcantara, and leather, and (the gods have heard us!) all of these choices will be available in the U.S.

      Wheels: 17" standard with 18" and 19" optional on 20i and 30i, 18" standard and 19" optional on 40i.

40i gets standard M sport diff, while on 30i it will be optional in something that BMW would call "ZMP".

Market positioning for the car seems to be distinctly lower than BMW, for example, the barebones 30i will have manual seat adjustments and no nav system.

And, finally (que the sad trombone): all models are automatic only.

maybe im not getting it..this car is meant to compete against STI's, and the rest of the 'hot hatch' cars? Will the toyota cars just have different motors?

So all cars from both brands are going to be automatics? It’s bad enough in a sporty BMW, but in a Supra? If true that’s bull****.

Something else that is caught my eye is the pricing part about being "distinctly lower than BMW". I hope the Toyota car comes in closer to the M240i at $45k.

There is no free lunch... I wondering where Toyota cut the corner? Or Z4 just be more expensive because it is a convertible.

Newsflash in 2018, no one buys manuals.

I would say both. ynguldyn's post (and past articles) did say Toyota will be more bare-bones vs the Z4.

supra is looking to be what the FR-S should have been...not what the supra should be.

I know where you are coming from, but Supra was always offered with automatic. Plus I'm sure they will come with paddle shifters, or maybe F1 style transmission. Nowadays manual transimissons are slower than auto, most people going for manual get it for the sheer reason of hitting the clutch and rowing the stick.

Some people believe the 255hp model "Celica?" will basically replace/kill the 86.

Bit surprised by that rumor. I'm assuming they'll put in BMW's DCT at least?

From what I understand from BP is that the initial launch will be auto for both cars. However, more options could follow due to feedback and demand.

BMW themselves is kinda/sorta moving away from the DCT themselves.

The F90 M5 is rocking the ZF 8spd, and rumors are so with the forth-coming G-platform M3/4. The F15/F16 X5/6Ms have been rocking the ZF 8spd since they dropped, just with an interface and tune that mimiced the DCT. In the real world, the DCT is fractionally quicker than the ZF box, with those differences probably only noticeable on track, and even barely. The M8 will have the ZF box as well.

As of now, BMW appears to only be putting a DCT trans in the 2019 LCI MINI cooper S...at least as far as new models go.

To someone elses point, it seems as though Toyota is building a GT-86 replacement, not a higher-priced halo model. Maybe the ZN6 chassis is dead-man-walking, and this is more of a second gen to it...hence only mild updates and a slew of "tuned by STi" variants on the Subaru side? Maybe Toyota drops the vehicle, and it only lives on as a Subaru.

To be fair to Toyota, the Supra was never really a great car on the twisties.

the cult like following that followed that Supra was all about uber high HP numbers and 1/4 mile performance (1000hp+ and still only in the 11's on a good day ). Looking for something to compete against the current NSX/GTR was never in the cards I suppose as even the mk4 supra trailed behind them a lot of the times.

When i think of the NSX and GTR of the past, i always imagine a bone stock car or some manufacture variation of it, i.e. nsx type-r, GTr nismo etc. When I think supra, i think 11in wide rear wheels, huge HKS muffler, 1000+hp single big ass turbo and zero traction anywhere.

Either way, 255hp in the S-FR concept would be a DREAM

I'm sure whatever trans they use will have paddle shifters, but that's still lame if it's true that would be the only one available. Yes, it was always offered with one, but when looking for one now almost nobody sees an advertisement and says "Oh, good! It's an automatic!"

      That sounds promising.

You know the old saying... "What do a 500 hp and 1100 hp Supra have in common? They both run 11s."

      Bummer.

So compared to the GT86 it is: 6 inches longer with a 3 inch shorter wheelbase, 3 inches wider and weighs 490 lbs more and packs an extra 130 hp. Sounds like a 718 rival.

Was hoping it'd have a neat hybrid power plant, or fusion reactor.

      The differences vs the MKIV.

      Wheelbase -80 mm (-3.2 in)
      Length -135 mm (-5.4 in)
      Width +44mm (+1.7 in)
      Height +25 mm (+1 in)
Curb weight -74 kg (-177 lb)

      335hp/8AT

So is this using the B58/ZF8 combo then? I'm assuming that's what'll be in the Z4 version.

Yeah I'm not buying those dimensions. No way this car will have a shorter wheelbase than the FT86.

Sounds like this car would be a hell of a lot more enticing if they offered it in a manual.

It looks pretty boy racerish (but in a good way, not in a CTR way) so I'd assume it wouldn't attract people with money that care about aesthetics so they'll most likely move over to the more subdued BMW. I think this thing will sell regardless based on the fact that it's new, joint development with BMW and because of the name but after that, I hope sales don't drop...could be a good idea to toss in a manual to attract the enthusiasts who are looking to move up from the GT-86/BRZ.
