Why do I have to pay freight for a car that's already on your lot and why is it itemized?

Because they don't just show up regardless.

I really enjoy my job. It's fun to work on a business and not in the business. Plus I consult across 11 stores, so I'm not tied down to my office. I work about 60-80 hours a week. I don't take new cars to drive; I have my own car that I use.

If a customer asked you what your cost is on a vehicle, would you give them an honest answer?

How can I find out about actual depreciation rates and fair market values for a car?

I am thinking of buying either a Subaru BRZ or WRX, and am trying to nail down some numbers.

Why do so many sales managers still insist upon using old, horrible sales tactics form the 70's when they know full well that most everyone that walks through the door is a smart, informed customer who has searched TrueCar, KBB, Edmunds, etc...

Do your minions profile customers and offer them bad rates, to see if they'll bite?

I like the cut of your jib.

Q: If you had to pick only one thing, what is the most impact-full improvement you wish you could make to the experience of buying a new car that would get more people to do it?

Why does a survey give me the choice of rating something 1-10 ad then consider anything less than 10 a failure? Just label it Pass/Fail.

I have always been told when negotiating the price of the car you should look to get 5% below invoice.

If you were on the customer side of negotiating for a new car, knowing what you know, would 5% off invoice be good enough for you or would you shoot for more?

How much hold back is there on a $33k MSRP with an invoice price of approx $29k?

That's fairly tough. Book values all pretty much suck. Best bet is load up the BRZO app in your phone, and scan craigslist. It'll show you average and median values for used cars listed. That market value is a lot better than whatever book values are published.

I got into our group because post college I wanted to sell VW's for 6 months to save money and then go off to use my degree. Jokes on me. Got golden handcuffs and it's been 11 years. I wanted to sell VW's because I had VW's, so I thought it would be an easy brand since I liked the product.

      No OEM's have declined us.

Inventory turn rate and market share determines pricing. We target to turn our inventory every 30 days, and we aim for 10% marketshare in our area. If we can't do that, prices go down. When we get there, prices level out.

Turn over is awful in this industry. Across our group, the bottom 1/3 of the sales staff turns over every 90 days. In the stores I run, I stabilize the staff by actually training them to get good at their jobs, which is rare in this business. If someone quits on me, I take it personally, and I feel like I failed them, not that they failed us. It's a rare perspective in this business.

Because they like to brag that they caught a fish this big with suckers. It's rare that I desk deals anymore, but when I do, every first pencil is full MSRP at a standard rate, with all F&I products loaded into it and disclosed. Why? Few reasons. Compliance is one. By doing that, I digitally archive that all customers saw the same thing (thanks CPFB). Second, it takes their temperature of what they know, and where they're at. Customers who have done research self identify right there and usually give an offer that I'll take.

Rule of thumb: if it takes more than three passes with numbers to close the deal, the desk guy is an idiot. If I get a reasonable offer back from the customer after my first pass, I'll take it and move on to the next one.
