From what I’ve read I think if I get a stage 1+ ecu and tcu my car should be fine providing I service it correctly.
I'm close. I have 39,000km since I put Stage 2+ on my Mk7.5 DSG, with a complete intake system replacement (or pretty darn close to it, including a large bar-and-plate intercooler). Those miles are mostly expressway, naturally, but I like to push it quite often, especially around town. With the first TCU tune I had, I encountered the error/failure condition for "clamping force exceeded", but that was fixed with a later TCU tune update. I've had no other problems with the tunes or car. According to DAP, these cars can handle up to 450hp (crank) without too much concern as long as you're not being totally crazy with them.

After reading the last several months of posts I'm feeling like I should get a refund. I'm still within the 15 day refund policy. Kinda wished I would have read this first. Welp back to the unitronic dealer.

For sure get your money back while you can. If you have any plans to go past stage 2, you will be unhappy with Unitronic.

john... I was wondering if you guys do any custom tuning or tweaking.
I purchased the unitronic stage 1 tune when i first bought my car.
This summer i have done a bunch of unitronic brand upgrades. CAI with cf air duct, turbo inlet, turbo muffler delete, resonator delete... Is your stage 1 tune still my beat option? I definitely do not want to lean out my car because of all the added air flow.
I don't mind paying a small fee for an updated file.

I also have no plans of doing a down pipe this year.

stage 1 and 2 are super safe you will not lean out by adding a cai, turbo inlet or anything like that.....

cant be that safe, im running at 12.2 (afr) at WOT.
Plus john was saying some tweaks were possible after doing the turbo inlet.

Sounds like a spot on afr @ full noise to me. Whats unsafe about 12.2 ? I would be more concerned if you were bang on stoichiometric

12.2 is perfectly fine! no idea why you think that is lean, can go abit leaner to be honest!

No body said 12.2 was unsafe. DI motors definitely can run a lot leaner then what you normally see when fuelling a turbo motor. I wanted to know what afr my tune was targeting to make sure im still hitting them.
From what ive recently read, guys can run into the low 13 (afr) at WOT on a DI turbo motor and still not have a loss in power- as long as you can run a good enough fuel so there is no knock of corse.
Ive never tuned a DI motor I am surprised by the afrs.

If you have not added a Downpipe or Intercooler, Stage 1 or Stage 1+ is your best option with the supporting modifications that you have. You won't "lean out" your engine because of the supporting modifications that you have added; the ECU will take care of that just fine.

What is not safe about 0.82-0.83 Lambda (~12.2:1 AFR) on a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine? I'm curious to hear your feedback. Yes, it's possible to increase boost a bit, along with a solid set of supporting modifications on the Stage 2 level, after adding our turbo inlet, but it doesn't sound like you're there yet.

      Hi John,

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I'm going to ask, anyway, because it's bugging me.

I recently gave up on the crackle tune for my 2018 R (DSG). I like the idea of a crackle tune, but the Unitronic one is a bit too over-the-top for my tastes. I'd like it a little more reserved (not such loud pops and maybe fewer pops--less gas overrun?). Is it possible to get a custom crackle tune that's a bit less aggressive? I miss the crackle tune now that I don't have it, but it was so loud and over-the-top while I had it.

I too would be interested, especially if it was very subtle much like the european cars have from factory.

Shamelessly waiting for Launch Control and No Lift Shift (boost between shifts) for the 6MT .:R

      JB1 Map until then...

I like everything Unitronic is doing --> frequent sales, great support, tune at home, fair priced UniConnect+ cable, support, forum presence... I just need those 2 amenities!!!

      Cheers!

Why not UM you ask? Well, Uni dealer is around the corner from both work and home and I like having full control of updates and switching maps at home and on-the-fly.

I think 12.2 is fine, i just wanted to make sure I was hitting the intended targets. This is my first GDI turbo car and i guess im used to seeing the crazy amount of fuel one sees with a non DI turbo motor.

      Thanks for the replay, John

Not to hijack the thread but the ots maps are garage. Just buy from a tuner you like (do your research) then have your car tuned by them.

Just got my stage1+ uploaded this weekend. Beyond thrilled with the difference. While the sale is going on I'm very tempted to get the downpipe and go stage 2 (whos got one for sale?!).

I echo the previous guys. we need a launch control option for manuals, different crackle tune options, and you have to find a way to get us a boost reading on the menu screens!

Thanks to John and everyone on this thread, I took advantage of the sale and installed Stage 1+ ECU and TCU tunes on my Mk7.5 Saturday. Very straightforward but I called support about one issue and was very impressed with the instantaneous answer from Patrick! First tune I've ever had (used to have to spend thousands of $$$ to get that kind of HP when I was racing sports cars!). Yesterday I tried out launch control and was astounded by the performance of the little beast! The last Unitronic tune I had was on a Mk 5 JSW TDI where the TCU tune was the best thing I did to the car. This one also greatly improves the performance of the DSG as far as response, smoothness and performance. Only wish I'd done this months ago! Happy Motoring...

The Exhaust Crackle/Overrun settings are what we found to be desired by the majority of the market, and mapped our calibrations according to what the market demanded. I agree with you, it's way over the top and I'm not sure that I could deal with it daily, but this is what the majority of the market desired, through our market research and polling. The current duration is at 5-sec, but I find that reducing the duration to 0.75-sec is perfect. I did this for one of our Support guys, and it's perfect. I'm seriously hesitating to state this in the public, because I can foresee some people not being able to have patience, but I can customize it for you, so long as you're patient with me and can fully understand that I can do this when free time presents itself. If you're interested, email me at js[at]getunitronic.com.

Thanks for your feedback; I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying our offerings. LC & NLS for 6MT is something that is certainly possible in the future, but we'd need to see a significant demand for this to accelerate this in the development schedule.

      Thanks for the replay, John
Got it. Your original post / message didn't seem like you thought it was fine, by the comment you made, "can't be that safe" so I just wanted to clarify for you. GDI is great!

I echo the previous guys. we need a launch control option for manuals, different crackle tune options, and you have to find a way to get us a boost reading on the menu screens!

Thanks for your feedback, guys! I'm happy to hear that you're both enjoying it.
