Thread: Have we ever had one of these? - A drift car build thread

    1. 02-28-2017 10:43 AM #1
Hands down, my favorite part of the car lounge is build threads. We're really fortunate here to have such a great collection of talent and diversity that you could easily follow the journey of everything from turbo Porsches to pre-war Packards to rust bucket Ford rangers. I've had a few threads (Buh buh buh Benny and the jets) of my own here, but something that's always eluded me (and I think TCL) is a drift car. I know the motorsport(?) itself is certainly polarizing, and most of the cars are complete wrecks, but I've loved it ever since my first exposure over a decade ago.

So where does that leave us?

      The plan:
      1. Obtain a suitable chassis that hasn't been hacked to ****, wrapped around a telephone pole, or rusted away
      2. Clean EVERYTHING
      3. Choose, acquire, tune, and install a drivetrain
      4. Hit the track
      5. Crushing realization that I'm not Keiichi Tsuchiya
      6. Repeat step 4 + 5

What you will find in this thread:
      - Good pictures
      - Amatuer, at best, video content
      - Dad jokes

What you won't find in this thread:
      - Hoonigan stickers
      - Silly shift knobs
      - Ziptied everything

I hope that suitably frames out what I'm trying to accomplish here. As always, I appreciate your feedback, criticisms, and suggestions.

      Thanks!

Before we get into the build itself, I posted a quick question last week about my Chevy truck that I'm hoping to tow the car with.

Huge thanks to everyone that commented. Hopefully we'll get the same amount of participation in this thread too. That being said, I followed your advice and recently installed a transmission cooler and temp gauge!

Coming next: The chassis comes home and we talk vroom vroom parts.

There's nothing wrong with zip ties as long as they're being used as intended.

This thread will become more interesting once you actually have an actual car. I haven't watched the video, so what are you planning? A 240SX with a Coyote sticking through the hood? What?

      Should be interesting.

I've got a line on a 240SX from a co-worker that a buddy and I might pick up as a drift car. Gonna see what happens when the weather breaks.

I wish you luck. Hopefully it won't end up for sale on craigslist as a half finished project in a few months.

Thanks, everyone. A stock 240sx has been purchased, however, it's missing an engine...

      Tough call. It's either:

      A. do a crazy awesome power plant and spend the next 2 years building something really rad

      or

      B. do something reasonable and actually go drifting

      fair point

i guess if the point isnt so much the build, but the use of the car, then i can understand that

can you just drop in some random turbo nissan motor then? least amount of hassle?

It's on the fringe of being clean enough to save and ****ty enough to just say **** it and drift it as it sits.

I have enough hobby cars and no place to park another nice car, so wifey won't give me any **** if it's just a cheap drift car with shared usage/expenses.

That's awesome. Right now my main problem is I don't have a place to store/work on a car.

Secondary problem is that I have no idea how to work on a car lol

What is the reasonable 240sx "just drive it and actually go drifting" (option B) that is the general consensus? I mean I see a ton of LS swaps, obviously SR20's.... I know the factory engine is stout but doesn't offer the most desirable power output.

Drifting is a neat motorhobby. The cars are always interesting. Subscribed.

The KA24DE is not a bad starting point and handle a little boost nicely. I would focus on the steering and suspension set up first while using a low boost KA. Plus if you blow it up they are easy to replace.

In for more. Hopefully this becomes more entertaining when car is acquired and worked on.

For the option of build something crazy or drive it, why not do both? Drive this one, get the feel of drifting (not sure of your level of skill), then go big next summer or something.

OP, good luck with your build. And please bust this tired do-rift-o genre wide open. It deserves to be pilloried.

Technically we still don't have a drift car build thread. I would be interested in this thread if it became one though.
