Had some decent initial outings with the Golf at Gateway and Blackhawk.

Didn't break, didn't crash, and made the car faster each time, but was constantly fighting a soft top end power problem - like would not even rev above 6 and fell on its face at 5400.

I decided to build up a solid lifter head with a better cam for my class (in place of the good stock head and cam). When I took it apart I realized the cam had been advanced 2 teeth. No wonder it would not run right. No amount of logging an tuning was going to fix that.

Still put the new head on with back cut manley valves, HD springs, shim under bucket lifters, good cam and good valve job. Cut to give 11.5:1 compression with a cometic .045" gasket.

Dyno tune went well, and the next race - June Sprints at Road America went better.
Ran faster than I ever did in IT: 2:49.x Friday, 2:48.0 Saturday after a tune update, 2:45.3 on Sunday with some setup changes and fresher tires and driving better.... until I didn't.

Lost the car in the kink trying to get a good run on the class leader to attempt a pass at Canada corner on the 2nd to last lap...

This corner is flat in 5th if EVERYTHING is perfect. I ran it flat a few times, and would 4 wheel drift about 2/3 through and then grip smoothly on exit. Exit speeds were typically in the low 100s mph. This time with a big draft off the leader it started to come around in that last 1/3 of the corner, and my hands were not fast enough to keep it of the wall driver right. BIG hit, but I'm OK.

Hope to get to a frame shop this weekend and start finishing the molds for the composite fenders.

The car is finally competitive. Looking forward to the next race.

Frame shop visit was not encouraging.
I'm having another guy look at it, but at this point I am finishing up the fender molds and trying to get the new Jetta coupe build done in time for the runoffs.

It's a ton of work, but it will be a shame to miss Indy.

      Update -

The Jetta was not going to get done in time.
Talked to another body guy, who feels comfortable clipping the parts car to fit the Golf front frame ears.
The Golf repair is a go. He wants to start with measuring and deconstructing the donor car, so I need to get the right side mold done NOW.

Let's see if I can make Flikr images work....

      Current state of the Golf

Current state of the Jetta - too much detail stuff to do on this. I'd rather make it a winter project.

Left side fender mold layup is done

Left side mold is clear of the form!

Now need to get the right side done stat.

Filling in the wheel opening and detail cleanup of the shape. This is the most tedious, messy process....

Ready to build the mold edge 'walls'.

Ready for release film and gel coat.

Here is the growing pile of broken chit...

The other mold is done. It came out nicer than the first. They are not as duplicate as I would prefer, but I needed to move on to get the Golf straightened out.

The goal was to pull the forms off the parts car, strip it down, and deliver it to the body man first thing this morning. It will be a day late, but he should be measuring and cutting this week.

Thanks. Only have 4 more weeks to get it together.
The front is off the parts car. Hope to have the race car back from the body shop Monday.

Found some other neat photos in the IMS photo album.

Helping Greg a little in qualifying 3.

Lap 1, Turn 1. I missed a shift on the start and shuffled back. Luckily meant I did not get hit when the Datsun locked up into 1 and knocked the #2 qualifier wide (red CRX).

A neat shot in the esses.

This year is all about getting ready for the Runoffs at VIR. This means getting setup dialed in for the Hoosiers, learning VIR and staying fresh. Hoosier Tire Midwest stepped up to help with tires to make it happen at the June Sprints and VIR Prod-Fest.

Had a rough weekend at the June Sprints. Motor broke before we got any timed laps, and motor home broke down in a one lane construction zone on the way hone.

Getting things sorted now for Prod Fest, and planning a pretty full season next year.

So - Prod Fest at VIR in October was cancelled due to flooding at the track.
We were 14 miles from VA border when we found out.
Turned around, and found a race going at at Mid-Ohio on the drive back to Chicago.

Only had about 5 green flag laps in Saturday qualifying and race due to other cars having issues and oiling down the track. Never had a chance to do any shock adjustments and comparison. I figured this was a sign that this was not the weekend, and headed home Saturday night. It was not a totally wasted weekend. I got the ecu bluetooth data logging to an android tablet working, and got the DL-1 Data system up an running.
Still - it feels like I just burned $600 of gas towing across the country for no reason....

It felt great to put a fully functioning race car in the garage for the winter. There are a few projects to wrap up on the Golf, but I really want to focus on getting the Jetta ready for VIR Runoffs. Also - 2020 runoffs will be back at Road America.

Planning on VIR in April, Blackhawk in May, Road America in June - Runoffs in September, and possibly another trip to RA or BHF as needed to test and improve along the way in 2019.

Ready to load up for Blackhawk Farms this weekend.

      Small changes -
      Added an Accusump

Added a fuel accumulator (after removing the oem one in 2017 - mistake...)

      Made an air "box"

      img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/46968839164_1458c1d62a_k.jpg[/img]

      A little bit of aesthetics...

(It looks like Flikr is having issues - most of the images in this thread are broken, and I can't even see them in my album. I'll try to remember to come back and clean this up later.)

      Hey there,
Do you have any photos showing your brake duct set up? Specifically the routing and how your getting the air into the rotor?

      Awesome car!

      Thanks!

Had an up and down weekend at the June Sprints last month.

Started out just shaking the car down in a damp session on dry tires, and we pretty far down the time sheet.

Then ran Q1 with older tires to get some data from the motor and get the driver acclimated (I had not run a lap at speed here since the June 2017 crash)

In Q2 on Satuday morning I finally manned up and put in some good enough laps to qualify 2nd in a VERY competitive field (6 of the 7 HP cars either have been, or are legitimate contenders to be on the Runoffs podium).

The race was going fairly well, running in a tight 2nd when 5th gear let go (on a newly rebuilt trans...).

Changed the box Saturday night, made some setup changes and driver learning from the data on Saturday.

Made a dumb mistake going wide in T7 on lap one, falling behind a slow FP car that proceeded to race as though we were in the same class, and stacked the top 4 in HP together. I finally forced my way past, and had put a few seconds on the group when the right drive shaft pulled out of the outer CV in Canada Corner...

So - no podiums, but the data shows that a clean lap is in the 2:40.3 range (ran a 2:41.5 as my best real lap). The lap record is a 2:39.x, so we are getting there.

Next up is a regional at Blackhawk to test the new MS3x ECU, followed by a 2 day test at VIR in early August, and then one more regional at Blackhawk as a final shakedown before the runoffs.
