For Sale: 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0L 16V (Central Maryland) - drivable, for parts or project

I've owned this Scirocco for the past 18 years, most of them on the west coast. Since coming to the mid-Atlantic it has been lightly driven about 2500 miles/year. This is a fun little car that hugs the road and is a blast to drive, a true classic. It has been upgraded with a 2.0 liter 16V block and a close ratio 4K transmission which only add to the fun factor.

(UPDATED) Now starts, runs and drives. Needs a jumper across the fuel pump relay to run. Front struts are mismatched, stock exhaust is rotted out, and could use other work as well (see below). It would make a great project car, or a treasure trove of parts for an engine swap or restoration.

The good

chassis
217k miles on chassis (working odometer!)
original flash silver metallic paint
maintenance records available for period of ownership dating back to 1999
new battery (2017)

engine
2.0l 16v 9a block from a '91 Jetta GLI which had ~80k miles on it, now ~161k
original 1.8 16v head, decked by 6/1000ths after blown head gasket (2007)
european intake cam (from a 16V KR head)

transmission
4k transmission with 0.80 5th gear and diff bolt kit installed (to prevent "self-machining syndrome")

suspension
upper and lower stress bars (Eurosport)
H&R springs and Bilstein sport shocks (all due for replacement!)
new ball joints (2017) and driver control arm (2017)

brakes
OE rotors (10.1" front, 8.9" rear) with pagid pads
rebuilt driver rear caliper (2014)

exhaust
borla ss muffler 2.25" w/plain stainless tailpipe
otherwise stock

body
european headlights, turn signals, and tail lights (rear fog lamp + no DOT side reflectors)
snowflake rims with toyo extensa 185/60r14, plenty of tread left
original compact spare tire, jack, tool kit, owner's manual included
underbody is very clean, little if any apparent rust

interior
dash is pretty clean, only 1-2 small cracks.. dashmat included
cloth seats in excellent condition (bolster tears on driver seat repaired/sewn shut)
tilt/slide sunroof (has not been opened in several years but worked at last use)
viper alarm system and power door locks
programmable intermittent wiper relay
working A/C (has been converted to R-134a)
rain tray intact (crack repaired and does not leak)
working odometer w/ MFA instrument cluster
missinglinkz shift linkage and homemade short shift kit
armor door plates
alpine CD head unit, amplifier and two 10" subwoofers included

The bad

mechanical
broken passenger side motor mount and downpipe flex coupling
exhaust is rusted through at midpipe-to-downpipe junction
core support crack (~15 years old, stable) is braced with a crossmember reinforcement bar

body/interior
faded paint (roof, bumpers and wheel arches)
most body panels have a few dings and early signs of surface rust
large dent in passenger rear quarter panel (>18 years old, stable surface rust)
hood dented on driver side (~13 years old, stable surface rust)
rust forming near the hatch badges, on the wiper arms, and at the corner of the windshield
windshield has a small stone chip
rear decklid carpet has disintegrated and needs to be recovered

The ugly

(UPDATED) front spring perch on driver side had previously collapsed due to rust (a 10 y.o. aftermarket Bilstein strut rusted, not the chassis itself) and has since been replaced with a new Sachs strut assembly (2017)

Work needed:
passenger side motor mount (parts included! see below)
whole exhaust system (downpipe+midpipe) between manifold and muffler
passenger side front strut (recommended for safety)

I have a big box of spare parts and tools that will be included in the sale, including:
- new passenger side motor mount pressed into a bracket, ready to install
- new timing belt and tensioner
- bentley manual
- spare windshield seal
- brand new oil filters, wiper blades, front brake pad set, etc.
- original US spec 16V tail lights
- vacuum brake bleeder, HVAC gauge set, timing light
- many others

Starts, runs, drives.. was daily driven until recently. No known mechanical issues aside from those mentioned. Great on the highway but currently a little rough around town due to lack of exhaust backpressure. It's currently drivable but is loud and there's a lot of vibration at idle from the motor mount.

While not perfect this car has been with me a long time and was generally well cared for, received regular oil and filter changes, and is in pretty good shape for a 30 year old vehicle, all things considered.
